I guess we need some input from Dan.

It's good to see so many guys onboard.

Dave - if we give a midsized blade - I think it'd be great if Jeff and you talk and one of you does a tactical sheath, and the other a nice EDC - our troop won't be in Iraq forever - when he gets back, I'm sure he'd love to be able to have something nice to put his Scrapper in while on a hike or around town. Just a thought.

Dice, That's a great idea.

Either way I'm sure me and Dave can work together on multiple sheaths for multiple knives or a Tactical and EDC for one. I'm more than happy to share the task with ya Dave...

Any ideas as to how the group can get knives to individual soldiers/Marines? Other than seperate packages, I don't know how we could do that.

Could return receipts be used, in some way, to insure the intended guy got the knife? I don't know return receipts work.

I know some who may want to participate may be financially strapped. Maybe dogs could go in together on a knife and split the expense?

I can't do "a knife" but would be glad to kick in some bucks towards one. What I would suggest is that you as the organizer collect funds via paypal from whoever is contributing. That is what Mag22 did when organized something like this and we (the yard) got that Mutt for Gravelface in appreciation of his service/sacrifice.

When you decide which soldier is getting the knife, you just want to get his APO address and insure the package - it should get to him just fine. Maybe leave him a note telling him how to get on the forum and let us know he got it whenever he's able.

Anyways, I think that a single organizer w/ the rest of use contributing via Paypal is the best way to go.

I don't want to be presumptous and I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I'd be happy to serve as "organizer." Understand though, I've never done anything like this before. As a relatively new member, maybe you guys would feel better if someone, with more tenure organized. I'd be fine with that too. I just stepped up to keep the process moving.

How should we determine what knife we'd like to send. Personally, I think a mid sized knife, that doesn't weigh much, would be appreciated. Maybe Dice and Gravelface can give us their thoughts, having served recently.

If we can decide on the knife, maybe the organizer can approach Dan with some particulars, and get a price from him.?.?

Maybe talk to cold one first. I think he got the new job in order to keep Dan from having to do web related stuff and keep him at the grinder. I bet we would have a round of DFLE's already if Dan could just make knives and not have to worry about the running the business part.

My suggestion is get permission to run a program from Cold One.

Have Willieboy find deserving recipients.

Have a trusted treasurer(there are lots of good choices here)collect all the money and knives and send them directly to the soldiers. I would also suggest people donate useful knives that would work for a soldier but maybe don't appeal to you.
Who knows maybe some poor sniper out on a roof in Iraq in 110 deggree heat might end up with the 800$ Bear Gryls knife?

What do you think ColdOne?

Here's an update. On Unsub's advice, I contacted ColdOne and he'll check with Dan about the availability of knives and, I hope, Dan's thoughts in general.

Hi Guys, just wanted to check in here.

I am away from home and on a really flaky connections. Once I am back I will do some checking for everyone.

That being said, Dan really is all out. I will be the first to admit being surprised if there is indeed steel available for this.

I know there has been a lot of frustration at the lack of steel for us around here, however I think it is more frustrating for Dan than it has been for us. He really likes this place and the members that make this place what it is!

I don't have details or information, just a general feeling about communications to back that up.

All that being said I have an optimistic feeling or opinion that the last drought won't be repeated! And that we may even see more steel soon!

And yes, I am trying to be optimistic about this, after all, what does pessimism bring or solve!

Chris

Chris, I don't know that these knives have to come from current inventory. Suppose the yard wanted to send 20 model x's. Could Dan just make up a batch for this order?
