I'd be interested in buying a Scrap Yard knife for a soldier serving in either Iraq or Afganistan. Bark River had such a program, wherein forumites bought one of the Barkie Sandstorm models for a Recon Marine. The cost to the forumite was $100. I think Mike Stewart sold them at cost. If I remember correctly, Mike made up a batch of knives and then forumites sent him the money. I'm not sure who or how the knives where shipped to Iraq.

I think this would be a great way to show support for our troops. What think you? Could the dogs get this done?

There have been some sour pusses who say that those guys can afford their own knives and for a single guy with no real expenses it is true but for the guys with families to support and a home off base it is quite a different picture.
I would want to find a guy who could really use a good knife but otherwise could not afford one. Those organizations that help out vets families in need can probably help you find one.

Sour pusses need not participate. No problem. Strictly voluntary participation. I don't know who can afford what. I do know these guys have their asses on the line for us. If I can help them in any way, I'm there.

Also, I don't want to stir up trouble in the yard with a rancorous debate. This is something I have done in the past and can do again on my own. However, if Dan and others want to participate, I'm in.

I think this is a great idea. If dan provides the steel at cost, the yard can kick in whatever they want. Everytime X$ is contributed, Dan ships another knife. You could nominate soldiers you know to get in line for a knife.

A single soldier does have decent free cash, except remember alot have probably never heard of scrapyard, and when stuck in the desert, they don't exactly have time to surf the net and spend hours hitting F5 hoping to get the next release.

And for soldiers that have families and are enlisted they don't have free cash. When i was in only 7 years ago i know there were plenty of soldiers with families that still relied on food stamps. FOOD STAMPS!! soldiers willing to lay down thier lives needing food stamps to get by.

Hopefully this idea will take some traction. I think it would be a great thing. I would also suggest that with each knife that goes out be attached with it a request that the lucky soldier pass on thier knife to another when their tour is done, so the blade can continue serving.

just my 2cents.

I would be more than happy to participate.....however, I would prefer to see the knives sent to individuals rather than "care packages", while I was there, the Officers and high ranking NCOs skimmed the best stuff for themselves. Those are the ones that can afford the best stuff and leave the lower ranks with the left overs. I am sure it isn't like this everywhere...just everywhere I have seen.

If this works on a nomination type basis, I am in. A friend, a niece/nephew, neighbor's child, sibling....a specific name to send it to.

Sounds like a good plan is developing so far!

Tell you what I'll do...

I'll supply a sheath for said knife if needed for starters and then see how things develop from there.

Absolutely, maybe these things work differently in the Army and Marines, but while I was in the Navy (pre-1990), I'd expect such a prize to get grabbed by a higher-rank REMF rather than to find its way to someone who might need it. Khaki looks after khaki, and if anything goes wrong a blue-shirt will be taking the fall.

Never thought of the above. Sounds great.

Personally, I don't know any currently serving soldiers or Marines. Therefore, I don't care who get the knife. Just no REMFs please.

I know my son will participate too.

I don't know about the logistics about getting these pieces to individual guys/gals but it sounds great. In a program I paticipated in a couple of years ago, the package went to a Sgt./Major, I believe, and he distributed them to troops he thought had earned them. I certainly would want these knives to go to the line troops versus REMFs as well.

Dan, if you read this, I'd be happy to do any leg work necessary as far as getting addresses etc. If you could ship them, and include the cost of shipping in the price of the knife?

I'd like to see the blade go to a family member or friend of someone from the Yard. I'm always happy to contribute to a good cause, even if I can't give a whole lot.

In my experience, most soldiers have no exposure to great cutlery. When I was in I just had a Cold Steel folder and didn't know that the Busse family even existed. I sure made a whole lot more money when I was in than I do now, though - soldiers get paid pretty well (although a lot of my buddy's wives spent half of their paychecks on shoes...) - but I think they deserve a gift every once in a while to show our gratitude for their service.

Good idea, Bill.

I'll go along with whatever the majority decides, but personally, I'd prefer that there be no strings attached. I would hope that a knife would have personal meaning to whoever receives it. Assuming that they make it home OK, I'd want them to have the option of keeping it as a reminder of what they accomplished and that they can continue to overcome adversity. Perhaps I'm overly optimistic (and anyone who knows me would tell you that optimism isn't my forte), but if these get to the right people, then even if they keep the knife, they'll be more likely to "Pay It Forward" within their abilities as the result of our small largess.

Has anyone spoken to Dan about this yet?

Count me in. I agree on the no strings attached. Would be nice for them to have something that is theirs.

if Dan thinks this is a worthwhile project, i'm guessing there would be more than a couple of knives going out. maybe some of the sheathmakers could get together and do the sheaths at cost. Can't have good steel going to troops with no pants.

Dave - if we give a midsized blade - I think it'd be great if Jeff and you talk and one of you does a tactical sheath, and the other a nice EDC - our troop won't be in Iraq forever - when he gets back, I'm sure he'd love to be able to have something nice to put his Scrapper in while on a hike or around town. Just a thought.

Either way I'm sure me and Dave can work together on multiple sheaths for multiple knives or a Tactical and EDC for one. I'm more than happy to share the task with ya Dave...

Any ideas as to how the group can get knives to individual soldiers/Marines? Other than seperate packages, I don't know how we could do that.

Could return receipts be used, in some way, to insure the intended guy got the knife? I don't know return receipts work.

I know some who may want to participate may be financially strapped. Maybe dogs could go in together on a knife and split the expense?

I can't do "a knife" but would be glad to kick in some bucks towards one. What I would suggest is that you as the organizer collect funds via paypal from whoever is contributing. That is what Mag22 did when organized something like this and we (the yard) got that Mutt for Gravelface in appreciation of his service/sacrifice.

When you decide which soldier is getting the knife, you just want to get his APO address and insure the package - it should get to him just fine. Maybe leave him a note telling him how to get on the forum and let us know he got it whenever he's able.

Anyways, I think that a single organizer w/ the rest of use contributing via Paypal is the best way to go.

I don't want to be presumptous and I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I'd be happy to serve as "organizer." Understand though, I've never done anything like this before. As a relatively new member, maybe you guys would feel better if someone, with more tenure organized. I'd be fine with that too. I just stepped up to keep the process moving.

How should we determine what knife we'd like to send. Personally, I think a mid sized knife, that doesn't weigh much, would be appreciated. Maybe Dice and Gravelface can give us their thoughts, having served recently.

If we can decide on the knife, maybe the organizer can approach Dan with some particulars, and get a price from him.?.?

Maybe talk to cold one first. I think he got the new job in order to keep Dan from having to do web related stuff and keep him at the grinder. I bet we would have a round of DFLE's already if Dan could just make knives and not have to worry about the running the business part.

My suggestion is get permission to run a program from Cold One.

Have Willieboy find deserving recipients.

Have a trusted treasurer(there are lots of good choices here)collect all the money and knives and send them directly to the soldiers. I would also suggest people donate useful knives that would work for a soldier but maybe don't appeal to you.
Who knows maybe some poor sniper out on a roof in Iraq in 110 deggree heat might end up with the 800$ Bear Gryls knife?

Hi Guys, just wanted to check in here.

I am away from home and on a really flaky connections. Once I am back I will do some checking for everyone.

That being said, Dan really is all out. I will be the first to admit being surprised if there is indeed steel available for this.

I know there has been a lot of frustration at the lack of steel for us around here, however I think it is more frustrating for Dan than it has been for us. He really likes this place and the members that make this place what it is!

I don't have details or information, just a general feeling about communications to back that up.

All that being said I have an optimistic feeling or opinion that the last drought won't be repeated! And that we may even see more steel soon!

And yes, I am trying to be optimistic about this, after all, what does pessimism bring or solve!

Chris, I don't know that these knives have to come from current inventory. Suppose the yard wanted to send 20 model x's. Could Dan just make up a batch for this order?

Likely not. I'd imagine that when one of the ways Dan keeps prices down are big runs of a product. Twenty or thirty units of a particular knife will likely cost as much as what we pay retail for.

Don't trust me with the money I'll spend it.

I like the donate a knife useful knife program. I've got a few blades around here that just sit and do nothing.
