In my experience, if you first heath the blade in scalding water and then submerge the blade in vinegar, you'll get a solid, evenly colored darker blade. Let it soak for an hour or so. If you want it darker, repeat. For some reaxon, some of the darker color will come off if you then polish the blade lightly with Flitz.

I've done some kukuris that were too large to submerge in anything I had so, after heating the blade, I wrapped the blade in vinegar soaked paper towel and let it set in one of my wife's baking dishes. (She loves it when I do that.) Got kind of a tie-dyed effect.

Simple carbon steel works better than tool steel like S7.
I used bluing to fix some parts on my Enfield. I thing that knife POP did looks pretty good.

I used a carbon steel mora to spread sour cream on a burrito and it got patinad instantly.

how do you take the finish off of a knife? other than using a belt sander.

i think i'm gonna soak my old crappy thrwoing knife in scolding water and take a paper towel soaked in lemon juice and wrap the knife in it.

kind of a combination of what some people said.

i think it turned out okay. i'm practicing on some cheap knives of mine. i'm taking the finish off of one of my gerbers, and maybe i'll patine it when i'm done.
