It’s a free market, I don’t see anything wrong with people buying more than one. First come, first served. I think it’s a bit excessive people buying a dozen or more though or something like that. That’s a bit hoggish. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with buying extra knives as an investment. What’s the difference between selling a month after buying, or waiting a year?

Bingo.
A two-knife limit is a good idea in theory but a nightmare logistically, especially when you're dealing with credit cards and potential refunds.
I don't agree with the bulk email idea either. There are a lot of tangential folks registered who seldom post here. Just look at tony22r's thread on "How Rare is Your Title?" Do you want *everyone* notified, or just the people who regularly participate in the forum? Again, a logistical difficulty.
Follow the boards, pay attention, and you're likely to get one in the first round. Or get someone to get your back and shell out another $10 or so in shipping. Or wait till the next round.
Supply and demand. Frankly, I think Dan and Patti want to sell knives. Period. And I don't blame them.
As you can tell from my avatar, I picked up four SS4's. I haven't flipped any of them, but I've only set aside one user. As for the other three, well... One is a spare, but I may get brave at some point and try a strip, buff, and (maybe) rehandle project on it.
The other two are more than likely trade fodder. If I miss the boat on the Dog Father, one of those may be my ace in the hole as a trade ticket. There are no guarantees in a free market, or else we'd all be rich. That's why I hedged my bets with a couple of extra SS4's while I could.

bld522, you bring up a Great point.. the way those Game Wardens were done @ BCS is just.. kinda sad.
Paul, the Limit thing would be nice.. maybe 2-4 max per person. iirc.. there was a shopping cart limit of 1 on ScrapYard's S6.. or was it SwampRat's M6? this is easily defeated by using multiple browsers, or just ordering again! This kind of "limit" would have to be by customer, address or CC.
P. Klink, pre-order max of 2 for 72 hours.. that's a great idea too! I'm liking that one.
DennisinMA, "foolishly ordered 2 FBMs".. No way man, now THAT was a good move! I did not.. and I Know i'll be kicking myself down the road!
Guyon, hmm.. never thought about those Damned tangential folks! yeah forget about 'em! notice through this forum sounds good ..maybe coupled with P. Klink's idea about pre-order max. that might be done pretty easily "Extravaganza" style via e-mail. (i never did a 'ganza so don't know the fine points about it)

if the largest customer demographic possible is the aim, the limit should be one. everyone can have a taste. you don't need a spare of this thing. it aint gonna break and you can only lose something if you put it down.
then again, that whole 'need based' ownership thing is bull. "why do you need an indestructible ten inch black knife?" i like to reply "why do you need heated leather seats, trendy clothes, 300 horses in your coupe, or a watch with a four figure pricetag?" couldn't do without those.
this is a rant in a rant thread so i didn't go off topic....heh.
one of these days i'll publish my thoughts.

Thanks everybody. I thought we'd get a lot of different opinions and, so far, I am not disappointed.
The way around the logistical nightmare Guyon points out is a simple mechanism called a backorder. Based on my recommendation, a person could place as large an order as they wanted to, but no more than TWO knives would ship in the first 72 hours after the product was released. Once the 72 hours had elapsed and all orders to that point had been filled, backorders could then be filled on a first come, first serve basis. Dan wouldn't be the first person to employ this technique nor would he lose potential sales by doing so. And I would argue the statement that Dan & Patti want to sell as many knives as they can as fast as they can. Promoting a large and loyal customer base is just as important, if not more important, than dumping your products to the guy with the fattest wallet. This is sensible if D & P want to fool with such a system. If I notice in time on the first go-around, I'm only planning to order one (maybe two), so I won't be edging out anybody else. Be nice to know that nobody else is edging me out. One problem I see with the system, however, is shipping costs. With multiple shipments on the maker's end, that means more $$ to pay someone to package and ship. Also more $$ for packaging materials. On the receiver's end, multiple shipments mean more $$ because of multiple packages. Most folks would rather order their 3 or 5 (or 25) and get them shipped all at once.

hmm. seeing the rate at which some of the knife consumers on the forums acquire new items and the prices of the items themselves i can't help but wonder...are these people loaded or is there a way around rent, mortgage, car payments, fuel, heat, water, electricity, food, and all the other goodies we used to do fine without but have now become essentials?
