Ontario 18" machetes on ordinary pine, cutting shooting lanes. I think my old hunting buddies just got a bad lot. Mine is still intact.

1095 like many other types of steel can be tough or brittle depending on quality of heat treatment.

id say most of the knives i own would be considered hard-use and i know how to sharpen them....

ive tried many different methods and have settled on the spyder co sharp maker,especially on larger blades.i do however have plans to start stroping...just need the gear.

im glad you mentioned to not sharpen the ding out.i was wondering about that and what you said makes sense.

im also glad to hear other similar stories and that the blade did what it was supposed to do.i just didnt know what was the norm.im still learning about steels and untill recently have had no experience with s7.

2 things for the record.

1-it is a ding and not a chip.absolutely not a chip and i will try to post pics anyways by tomorrow.

2-after reading my original post i dont know if i came across as mad or complaining.it was about 4am and we all know what happens at 4am dont we...ha,ha,

not mad or even dissapointed,just wanted thoughts from the experts/top dogs

That one of Darkjedi's looks like a warranty issue. 3 months is not bad but 6 months is excessive.

That looked like the one Noss batoned through a steel pipe.

KnifeGuy - I have a old stump of mesquite wood that is nearly petrified and is used for splitting fire wood. I started beating the DF on that with some maple dowels about 2" in dia.

This was definitely a bad one, and I look forward to some SR-77 in the future.

I was trying to compare it to my other choppers Basic 9, Battle Rat, and FBM.
However, this kinda put a monkeywrench into that plan.

i dinged my df on the first use and was real dissapointed but over time the rd9 has more dings and i am really happy with the df

I need to get out and use my big knives more. My only current big chopper is my Hooker(until my 4 DFLE's arrive <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />)and it is still in mint condition. My SS4 has seen HARD use and my YKLE is also now got a few love marks but I think I need to really break in the Hook and not just by opening beers <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/loopy.gif" alt="" />
