If you are going to use a hard use knife then you need to learn how to sharpen!

You cant avoid a nick forever on the edge, it is bound to happen. As long as there wasn't a big chunk of steel missing, then steel the edge lightly & sharpen it.

My personal stance on the little nicks is to not sharpen them right out. Why wear the blade back a mm or 2 every time? Over time as I sharpen them more they will disappear & they don't seem to compromise the chopping!

Well stated. I also agree with not feeling the need to completely grind out, or completely sharpen out nicks - Especially on a chopper, but even with small knives.

I get micro-chips in my kitchen knives. Harder steel more prone to chips. I still don't try to sharpen them completely back to flush. Waste of time, effort and blade.

Just get any deviation to the side back inline with the edge and call it a day.

Sorry, I did not give an explanation, but I was getting ready for work.

The damage happened while I was chopping on a wooden pallet. I was making sure that I did not hit any nails while chopping it down. While twisting out the blade from a fairly deep chop, the blade edge ripped (maybe a 1/8"). Naturally this concerned me.

So I figured, I would see if I could get it to continue to fracture up the blade, which it did. I later stripped the blade and noticed the spine of the blade there were cracks straight down the middle of the blade. It has to be a defective Dogfather

I contacted Patti and shipped the blade back to the shop. There were going to let me know if it could be re-sharpen or was it a total loss. That was three months ago. I have been told every two weeks that the shop was going to contact Patti as to my options.

No new information as of today. I am not upset just a little disappointed, but I understand this is a growing company and Military deserve to be top priority. I may have posted the pic out of disappointment.

It does look like darkjedi's DF had an air bubble in it looking at that darkspot/void in it.. It also looks like a DF that works VERY hard for its living!

I'd also agree about not wasting the time to polish or sharpen out the minor dinks 'user' knives collect, it's part of their charm!

I am a little surprised the warranty turn around has been 3 months- ouch!

I think it was definitely an air bubble. No more pics available since the DF was shipped to Busse.

Dark,

I would PM Patti and Dan on the forum here if the issue has not been resolved in that long. I suspect that you will have a solution in short order after doing that. Also, I think very high of you that you did not start some "I am pissed off" thread about this. That says alot about your character. Good luck bro.

Ron

I work for the government so three months is nothing, in government time.

I my main disappointment is that the DF cannot be turned into a bolo DF

That is some serious damage, not a ding. I chop some pretty hard wood on occasion, but I have never had any of my knives do that. I have seen 1095 blades just snap into, but mine have not so far. If just chopping wood did that, then the knife is defective. SR77 is incredibly tough steel.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

DD- 15 across is "Thread" or "Threat." Just wanna help you finish that crossword

Okay, I'm not funny!

I'm sure that Dan and Patti will square you away - that really is a much, much longer wait than I would have expected from them.

Diceman this is why my posts are always edited for spelling

61 across is the the one that stumped me.

The wait is not too bad, there have been some big military orders and knife shows since it was shipped.

What did you chop on to see if you could continue the Fracture????

As HD said, a SR-77 should not incure nearly that type of damage from chopping on wood and avoiding nails.

Actually, you could/should be able to hit quite a few nails and not have anything near the type of damage shown in your picture.

I am still assuming you chopped on some rocks or something (????).

If that damage is from wood, that blade was highly defective.
Even ironwood or mesquite which are both quite hard shouldn't do anything like that. (Petrified wood still isn't wood... )

--------

Side note: I also think some appreciation should be thrown in your direction for patience on this issue being resolved.

I think in all fairness, it is hard for them to get a single blade like this replicated.... Although, I am surprised they don't have a couple or few stashed aside somewhere.
A company like busse will have blade blanks produced in batches. Hopefully, they have a BIG batch of DF blanks coming soon for some DFLE's.

But, I also tend to agree with Diceman. I think they should have done a little more to get you a replacement sooner even if they had to custom make a one off as opposed to waiting a long time for a batch of blanks.

I am also a big believer in communication and customer service. I would have expected them to get and stay in touch with you about progress and timeline of resolution for the warranty.

Have they not told you when they expect to replace your blade?
