HOW TO - Build an electricity producing wind turbine

Mike writes -

"Several years ago I bought some remote property in Arizona. I am an astronomer and wanted a place to practice my hobby far away from the sky-wrecking light pollution found near cities of any real size. I found a great piece of property. The problem is, it's so remote that there is no electric service available. That's not really a problem. No electricity equals no light pollution. However, it would be nice to have at least a little electricity, since so much of life in the 21st century is dependant on it.

One thing I noticed right away about my property is that most of the time, the wind is blowing. Almost from the moment I bought it, I had the idea of putting up a wind turbine and making some electricity. This is the story of how I did it. Not with an expensive, store-bought turbine, but with a home-built one that cost hardly anything. If you have some fabricating skills and some electronic know-how, you can build one too."

Very nice.

Once I buy a place up in the mountains, I will build something similar for emergency situations.

If the $#!+ hits the fan where I am living now, electricity will be the least of my problems.

Arf arf arf... That's my other dog impression.

Sweet..
man it'd be nice to be "off the grid"
..completely energy independent.

My ideal mountain get away would be very well insulated, with ground source cooling in the summer, a heat exchangers in the ventilation system, and a geothermal heat pump to run radiant heat in the winter.

The goal is to regulate the temperature to 72 degrees year round with only a few solar pannels. Some days it will need more juice, some days less, with one of the new electric meters that can run backward, everything will even out.

If something goes wrong, prop up a few windmills or use the back up wood burning boiler to stay nicely climate controlled.

I keep plenty of bottled water on hand so I only need to worry about food and my ammo supply.

That is so cool, I always thought you could rig one up with an alternator, bank of marine batterys, a battery charger and a windmill like we have all over sask for areating ponds. The wind is incredible here as well.

Yes.. there is "free" energy all around us..
i really have to start reading up on this more..

Iirc.. I think main problem folks encounter is adequate ventilated battery storage.. 2nd hurtle was all the "regulator" wiring to the house's main fuse box.
