Now that the heat and humidity has broke here in N. Florida I find myself making several fires a week. It's great fun with firesteel in hand and seeing what I can do. This afternoon I planned to make a firebow. I haven't done that since I was a kid in boyscouts.

I made an attempt this summer with my brother - and even with two of us we failed miserably!! We had a lot of smoke, but that was it. We melted through para cord and worked until muscle failure...

After some research, I think that our bow was too tight. I'll get it eventually though!

I got everything ready on Monday. However, the wood was still wet, so I'm letting everything dry for a couple of days. Maybe this weekend I can get it going.

i really need to get some firemaking skills. i make them all the time but i'd like to try without matches, flints, lighters or....large amounts of flammable liquids.

That's what happened with me and pit Jr, the saying 'There is no smoke without fire' just ain't true, we got plenty of smoke and blackened wood parts but no [censored] fire !!!!

Cool pics. Starting fires in the wind with a ferro rod can be a reall piss off. Add rain or snow and it can be downright brutal.

I'll be trying it with some snow on the ground pretty soon! I'll be sure to take pix. If it would just snow...

I find snow not as challenging as rain, but challenging enough.
