Who would like to see a BIG Mutt-sized SKELLY? I love the ResC for chopping, but would like a little workhorse that is easy to pack and has a "worry free" handle, or lack there-of. .285" thick of course, full height grind, 4-5"...

Edit - The Boss said: "How about we vote on what my vote will be...democracy at its finest Dan"

Dan... I would be the happiest Dog in the Kennel if you made this one happen! I LOVE ResC, but I would love a Scrapper Tough big Skelly or (5) to stash and take with me everywhere... Right at 4" (legal limit for carry in most places) would be AWESOME!!!!!

OK GUYS - VOTE!!!

Did I forget to connect the dots that "no handle" = "less expensive" ? Of course that would be up to the boss... but it would also make sense!

Everyone has their own opinion... but I'd prefer people discuss and not just "vote and run!"

I think a big Skelly would be fantastic. BUT. I would like to hear the "cons" people may have...

And I'm saying you could Micarta Slab it.

And I'd surely carry a couple of them as just plain ol' Skellys!

I love my new Swamp Skelly and would kill for a scrapper one. At first I was not sure it should be a big skelly but now that I give it some thought it makes more sense as S7 seems better steel for a large knife. Although anyone who wonders about the edge holding of S7 just has to try reprofiling the edge by hand. I have been doing the edge on my YKLE for about a week and it is now done on one side and that is with a diamond sharpening stone for the lansky. It is looking pretty darn nice though.

I would like to see something along the lines of the Assault Shaker with a bit biger handle and maybe a slightly thinner steel possibly 3/16th .

I was also thinking that for a little shaker, INFI or SR101 is better. For a Mutt, I'd rather have big, bad, and tough.

don't care much for little anything from the busse family. the sar and skelly wardens are hot, but the beauty of their steel shines in the large knife.

i'd still love a street scrapper 4 in sr77, but the mora fills that role well.

I love the SS4 and the mudder handle. I don't understand why there are so few of them(just the Bog Dog and SS4)it is such a nice handle. Maybe it is hard to make.

One of the nice things about skelly's is how easy they are to carry and conceal.

I voted no. The simple reason is the thickness. It's just too thick of a blade imho.

I WOULD LOVE IT! more portable, it would be an awesome pry tool, would look awesome, and be cheap! id buy like 48574905780943758934 of them.

and for heavy use or for a BOG knife where you need something thats idestructible i like something thats really thick, like the mutt.

I think the skelly should come with a kydex sheath, too. Or else rainwalker should be REQUIRED to buy one.

I have stomped for this knife for so long my feet are bloody.

I of course vote for it in any variation at all!!!

And I'll take 4 please.

My immediate family ALL want one!

A good father provides for his family,so Dan if you make it I will provide it to them!

Peace.

I didn't vote but I would think a handle would be a necessity on a good sized knife that would be used for chopping. Having said that, off hand, I don't know how big a Mutt is or if it would be used for chopping.

You could use the "beat it with a stick" technique for chopping if you had too. I think a 4" blade would be fine for such a knife, and bigger than most. Something similar to the Becker Necker in a Scrapper would be fine with me.

there's this company called united cutlery that i would never compare scrap yard to.

you can loop some slacked cordage into the skeletonized handle to extend it, then hold it further back and chop with it.

you can send it to vic for a shaving edge.

you can bang that thick spine and split with it.

you can throw it like a brick through a window, skull, whatever you like.

you can own something different from the many knives you already have that fit the exact mold that provides your basis for not liking the skelly mutt.

you can not buy it and then regret it when vic, dice, and i post pictures in the jungle, the woods, and through a car hood, respectively.

There are a few reasons that a skelly handle is better for some knives than res c. 1 it is a EDC and can be easily carried and concealed.
2 it is a thrower ,most handles break but res c bounces and throws the weight off.
3 a very long knife needing a 2 hander handle looks silly with res c.

Now #1 is probably better served by INFI or 52100.
#2 would have me totally ,I have a CarbonV cord wrapped thrower I love.
#3 would be even better a S7 AK4S7 would be awesome especially in a CG version for around 200$. It would change the world of martial arts and self defence swords(admittedly a very small world populated with a fair number of whack jobs myself included)forever.

I voted no. The simple reason is the thickness. It's just too thick of a blade imho.

Dan has NEVER made an SR77 blade in anything less than .285 (CG) - you don't think that ALL scrappers are too thick, do you?

GUYS, seriously. How could anyone hate on this concept? Don't we have enough of "the same old stuff" out there for you guys???

Thick - YES - as ALL scrappers are (SS4 aside).

Chopper? NO. Batoning knife? YES. What CAN'T you chop through using a Baton and an indestructible knife? What isn't serviceable about a full height grind Scrapper? So... there are NO serviceable Scrappers?

Do you need ResC on a 4-5" knife? Absolutely not. More comfortable... yes. Needed? No. Bulky? Yes. Batonable handle? No. .285" = Thin slicer? No. Survival tank of a blade? Yes.

Lets get something DIFFERENT, AFFORDABLE, and SURVIVAL MINDED out from the Yard... with OPTIONS! Custom Micarta scale option? SWEET! Cord Wrap? WHY NOT? A Scrapper with an abusable handle area...? Never gonna see Yard Micarta = NO, so lets give this one a shot guys!

I think the concept is FANTASTIC. Hard use - abusable - DIFFERENT - this would be my second favorite Yard knife, I'm sure - next to the Dogfather. I can't even imagine how fantastic and versatile this knife would be. I hope it comes to fruition.

I'd still love to see all of those, Bruce! I think the Skelly would be a fast production item as well - no messing around w/ handles and rivets - just coat/sharpen/ship!

With the Swamp Warden being hot off the press, I think a small Scrapper warden would be redundant... but I think that I (and many) would get a ton of use out of a Survival Skelly Mutt! That'd be a lot of knife to have in a Skelly frame!

I was actually thinking about another run of the DM CG's. I mean it's great knife that a lot of hard users will want to use, military and other. Seems like such a pity that there was only 1 run of those lil tanks!

I had to vote No on the skelly, sorry guys, for those that want one I hope it does happen but I am just not in the market for one !
My ideal knife would now be a 3/16" Yardkeeper type blade, I guess this would be just like a Gen 1 or 2 Howler but with a different Yard name !!!

I think all the old Busse Combat handles used on the Mutt are gone, but you never know. I actually prefer the so-called Urban Mutt to the original. I like the flat grind better and the thicker handle better.

We're ready for the ScrapYard's most affordable, most versatile, most EDC'd offering yet, the one that breaks all the records, the one people will talk about for years (I should have gotten a case) the one that will best match the motto;

I could see them coming in at $50-60 - I'm not sure what the "cost" of a handle is, with labor, but with the original Mutt at $70, I think we'd save between 10-20. The Skelly Mutt would be a heck of a survival tool in a small package!

Full height grind might be a good idea on this one, actually...

I hope Dan was serious, when he said Democracy would rule on this one!!

I would prefer Scrap Yard come out with a shaker style blade instead of the larger warden style. A smaller neck knife would be great and I would definitely buy at least two!

I voted no. I want a grip to make my knife more stable and comfortable to use. I don't care for skeleton handles; they're barely acceptable on small knives (I grew fond of my Swamp Warden, but only after a double-wrap with paracord -- it certainly wasn't love at first sight). I wouldn't consider buying a larger skelly unless I intended to add custom grips as a project.

what a bargain

Aaaaand, that was one of the suggestions I made near the beginning of this thread. Mounting holes for custom grips. Post number 3.

I understand, and I even saw your early post about the holes. However, I consider Scrap Yard's access to the shop as a scarce, critical-path resource. If that's the case, and based on their shop time they can only release one non-military run every quarter or so, I'd rather see a different concept than a skeleton knife. I don't know that I'd even buy one, although I might just to maintain my collection. For me, a part of a Scrap Yard's knife's value resides in its comfortable, durable, shock absorbing, Res-C grips -- if I could send other knives (like a couple of my HI Kuhkris) into Scrap Yard to be re-handled, I would.

I can think of a couple that I wouldn't mine having Res-C handles on myself.

I do like skelly's too though.

Dan had recently said something about the shop being reorganized or expanded - or something - to allow for more shop time. Does anyone remember where that was posted? I think it was about 2-3 months ago...

I love ResC as much as the next guy - but we've already got a couple small, and several medium and large blades on that handle, and there's only so much left in the way of "variety." S7 maybe - for those who don't like the recurve on the hook/guard. And some smallish EDC's w/ ResC would be very nice. There's not much else that hasn't been covered, though. I'm hoping to see a few new knives pop up - and a skelly alongside another ResC handled knife would be excellent.

ResC is Soft. You've got to be careful when Batoning that you don't screw it up, and on a shorter knife like the DM, it doesn't leave much room for error! You can usually fix little cuts by heating it up with a lighter, but you do need to "be careful" with ResC, unlike Micarta or G10 or a SKELLY. The big winner for the ResC is that its much more comfortable than the other options!

Oh I just love it... I really haven't had a good chance to play with it much, so the jury's still out. I gotta figure out what kinda kydex pants I gunna make for it, so this weekend I'll get a chance to mess with it some. I did find out that size and shape wise, it makes a nice little companion to my NAA 22 mag.

I've even had kydex sheaths that tear up the ResC. Its super comfortable but fairly easy to cut/mar/jack up!

I have torn up my res-c already to
I think under a 6 inch blade it should be g-10 or micarta

Yep. Little itty bitty knives with blade lengths of 6" or less.

+1!

Is ONE skelly out of a pile of ResC too much to ask? ONE SCRAPPER that can have custom micarta grips done up for it?

Pshh - come on guys - A Scrapper Skelly isn't a boycott on ResC - I think the point is totally being missed.

Of course I've seen Noss' video! I posted a Scrapyard review and pix over there within days of his forum being opened, and I check up on his destruction often! At risk of being bold, I'll state that I was the FIRST person to suggest to Noss that a Scrapper be tested!

And if you like the Mutt WITH ResC... thankfully, there are Dumpster Mutts, Urban Mutts, and LE Mutts WITH ResC handles! (One skelly would sure please many of the rest of us who like the idea of it, though )

I missed out on the Game Wardens because my stupid home internet was down for a month! When they come back up I am getting one. But having a skelly Dog, I have many uses for these. I have my Busse Skeleton Key as well. These type of knives have grown on me.

D2 is fine with me Dice.. A saw the thread here a while ago about how good swamp D2 was (Bogdog tests?). I just think that an EDC would be carried all the time and get sweaty on occasions so stainless is better than carbon for the job.

A D2 yard shaker 3/16 thick would get my money even though I have just bought a CRKT Dogfish.

If we're going to dream about stainless here as well, then my vote is for H1 steel.
Man I really liked using my Spyderco H1 this season. Worked on three deer with it and didn't wash it until I got home days later. Not a mark on it.

However, the price for them to be made to SYK specs with all the heat treating and whatnot would probably make them even more of a niche item than they are.

the sheath for the dogfish isn't exactly as sturdy as something i would get from rainwalker to say the least.
