I saw a shorty DSA FAL in a G&A article on the history of the FAL that was incredible. The idiot politicians in my government not only won't let us own one but they destroyed 20 000 perfectly servicable FN Fals.
They could have been awesome gifts to our allies in Afghanistan.
The canadian army used Fals for a long time and it is a part of our history particularly a lot of peaceKeeping missions. I had quite a few Fal mag pouches but I gave them to a Canadian forces guy who collects FAL gear.

The FN FAL was used by both sides in the Falklands war and is one of the most widely issued weapons ever.

The Canadian troops who went from the Fal to the C7/AR15 were thrilled to get rid of it because it was the exact wrong weapon for clearing houses etc and range is notr really an issue when you can call in artillery. Where I see the FAL being useful is in counter sniping and sharpshooting or as a militia/home defence weapon. The chopped DSA made a wicked car gun but mostly it would work well in the same role the soviets used the SVD for.

In a soviet military unit everyone had AK-74's except the best shot who had a SVD (dragunov). This gave them the ability to engage targets out to 700 to 800 metres. The soviet sharpshooter (Sniper is different)consider the standard 4X scope perfectly adequate for 600 metre shots and actually prefered it for the field of vision.

The SVD another of my favourite rifles I can't own in my "free" country.
At least I can get a Norinco M-305 (M-14 clone) for 400 to 500$. The wood stock makes it not evil even though it is a semi auto .308 just like the FAL.

Roo's Garand scout would make the ultimate Canadian truck gun as out laws make every centrefire rifle other than the Enfield(10) and garand(8) only hold 5 rounds.

As far as DSA being behind I read somewhere that every gun factory that makes military weapons particularly AR components is way behind because of the war.
