Anyone here ever try out anything from Ontario knife company? Specifically their
R.A.T. 5 or 7? may be a better option for me as a working knife as I dont have to play "THE SHELL GAME" on wheter or not the scrapper 6 will be available again. Cause I might or might not be sitting on my computer when they go up for sale.

I've got an Ontario Spec-Plus Navy.. Supposedly 440A but it rusts like 1095! I wouldn't buy Ontario again, wait for the Scrapper 6! Did I mention it (Navy) was prone to small chips off the edge in moderate use?
In fairness I can't comment on the Rat 7 having not used one but they have reviewed well in a couple of British gun mags.. But they weren't Cliff Stamp'd!

I own a rat 7. it is pretty nice. Unfortunatly i have not done any heavy work with it, however, it does cut well enough. I prefer to do my heavy work with my machete survival (not a machete but a knife) from ontario. I know there are alot of people who will have something to say about that.

BTW what is "Cliff Stamped" Will b e using this blade HEAVILY for pelvis splitting while cleaning deer and utility use around the ranch. What was chipping? the finish? or the steel. 440 steel is [censored] IMHO

Cliff Stamp tests knives to destruction... He kills lots of knives but likes Busse and Swamp Rat Knifeworks. He hasn't tested any Yard stuff I am aware of yet.
Your opinion of 440 is justified IMHO!
Patti (Dan's wife and allround nice person to deal with in my experience) can sometimes take a little time to reply to emails, if Gravel-Face offered to sell you a S6 or gave you a lead on one consider it! The S6 is VERY good and GF is a forum regular..

He did, but I think it is the shiny model. I want just the plain jane working rig. Not a show piece as no one will ever see it but me and some dead deer.IXNA on the ontario then....

Just out of morbid curiosity, what IS your favorite hard use steel Chaos? Ever have any experience with Starrett 496-01 high carbon tool steel in a blade...? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

: I prefer the knife at the bottom of this page http://www.mooremaker.com/ I use one extensivley except it has handles made from Cow "shin Bones" jigged. Nothing fancy. Not sure of the exact steel that they use, but it is high carbon and Rust if you look at it funny. Clean and dress out upwards of 20 deer a season plus countless feral hogs year round. They take an edge very well and hold it even better. I've field dressed, skinned and quartered 3 deer in a single setting on ONE blade without ever hitting a whet stone. The blade is too thin on thier fixed blade model or I'd be using one of them for Pelvis duty. I have NO experience with Starret steel. I use an old Ka-bar currently, but it's coming apart from repeated use.

The Ontario RATS are great knives especially for the $$. I have used the RAT7, TAK, RAT 3 and had a play with the old RTAK. I think the RAT 7 is the most compareable to the Scrapper 6. The RAT 7 is a though and versitile knife and would be a better slicer than the scrapper, but the scrapper would be the stronger of the two in terms of prying strength. I would probably give chopping to the scrapper, but I would like to try them at the same time to give a definite answere.

I have had really good luck with Becker Knife and Tool for the money. I have wanted to try a R7 in D2. What do you guys think, D2 or the Carbon?

Carbon for sure. In a knife this size, I think D2 would be too brittle, plus 1095 is easier to sharpen.

I like the Rat 3 in D2...I had one worked out on trade and the dude decided to give it to his bro that was deploying...
I to have had good luck with BK&T 7...I took the scales off because I have small girly hands but other than that it is nice...hmm I got some micarta laying around here somewhere..hmmm
Get a SS6 if ya can bro..I love mine!

Chaos - You got the word directly from "The Man"! I will echo what others have already said concerning the knives in question. I have The Rat7 in D2 AND 1095, and they are decent knives for the money - I LOVE the blade shape/taper/point of the Rat7. However, the Scrapper6 is much more strongly built and better suited for splitting a deer pelvis, etc. as you are interested in doing. Though I like both knives, I would strongly recommend Scrap Yard Knives - the BEST choice for performance, price, and warranty if EVER needed!
