Dice, Maybe this will help you feel the desire for a stone knife: Stone knives can get ~500 times sharper than is possible with a steel knife. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Now THAT IS cool! Sharp is good... I would have guessed the opposite. Shows what I know. (next to nothing! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> )

Obsidian and similar stone knives are basically natural glass, Dan. This glass can be fractured with edges sharp down to the atom level; steel knives can't do that.

It makes sense now that you explained it. I would have never thought about it had you not, though. I take it that it leaves a very brittle edge? Probably great for cutting meat and whatnot, though.

Yes, brittle... but apparently easy to re-do, with relatively little material loss, for a skilled flintknapper. (I'm not a skilled flintknapper, by the way; I'd love to be, someday.)
