My understanding from posts I've read at BF and the Swamp is as follows:
INFI is tougher than SR101, but only by about 5% or so.
INFI has better edge holding than SR101 when cutting softer materials.
SR101 has better edge holding than INFI when cutting harder materials.
INFI is more rust resistant than SR101. But neither are stainless nor ar either prone to rusting.
So now that people have had a good amount of time to play with their Scrapper 6's and Dan has done extensive testing on the Dog Father, where does SR77 fit in?
I'd heard that S7 is somewhat prone to rusting but Scrapyard's transformation ofit into SR77 largely fixes this issue. And after seeing the DF tests, I'm inclined to think SR77 may be tougher than INFI.
Thoughts?

In rust resistance, I believe that it goes: INFI, SR77, SR101. SR101 being most prone to rust of the three. The SR77 evidently has a higher chromium content to help its' rust resistance.
I'm very interested in a performance comparison as well and would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts. However, since the SR77 is supposed to really shine in the high impact category, being modified S7, I've been waiting for the Dogfather to judge this for myself.

Thoughts? "Tougher" is a pretty subjective adjective, Rich. Define what you mean by "tougher". Toughness is defined as ability to take impacts against hard substances without suffering from chipping or fracturing. E.g., the extent that the steel will roll/deform rather than break.

In salt water sr77 surface browns very quickly (well within an hour or two), INFI just doesn't over that time scale. The rest of your observations seem pretty reasonable.
I'd suggest corrosion resistance wise it's INFI then a huge gap(!) then sr77 then sr101. INFI is pretty much stainless steel- the best stainless steel out there! Factoring in price and handle design (res-C protects the black coat which stops the tang rusting) the DF will be the chopper to beat, or even compete with..

The way I look at it is this; INFI is pretty much stainless but very expensive, sr77 is affordable but gets tin-worm (rust!). So how many rich yacht owners post here regularly?? DF to go please Dan!

I would call toughness it's resistance to lateral strees and impacts. What makes INFI rust resistant is not the cromium but all the other additives like nickel and vanadium. I would say that S7 is very close to INFI in toughness but lacking in some edge holding and corrosion resistance.

I have salt water soaked a SS4 and S6 so I agree about the corrosion resistance! Otherwise either is awesome.

Look at the testing of the Dog Father!! Have you seen it chopping through concrete?? THAT is MY definition of tough!!

I think that price plays a huge part in the comparison. If the Dog Father was made of INFI, what do you dogs think it would cost? $300, $350 or more?
With the remainder of the test pictures posted...I can live with SR77 for many many years.
I have had no experience with SR 101.
AKMatt I need 5 more posts to get out of the LapDog category!
