Speaking of Remington's, I just picked up a 870 12 gauge this week.
Haven't had a chance to take it out yet, and won't until later next week, but
I can't wait to try it out.

You want an old/odd firearm? Try this; I've got an old 12ga bolt action shotgun, and it still works fine.

Who sold it? None other than the local old Canadian Tire stores. I'll have to take some pics sometime. It's got a magazine that holds 2 shells, and of course one in the chamber makes three. I still haul it out every once in a while to shoot geese with; people give me the funniest looks when they see it!

I'm fond of the old Winchester 1897s. I've got a real one (in 12 ga) and I also bought one of the Norinco 97T "Trench Broom" copies. With most pump shotguns you must release the trigger, pump, then squeeze the trigger to fire, but with the 97s you can hold the trigger down and every time you pump, the hammer falls. Somebody told me that older Ithacas did the same thing, but I've never verified it.

I wonder if anybody makes a falling block, single shot 12 gauge.

It seems like that would be an overly expensive alternative to the standard break-open single shot. I doubt there's been a production falling block in 12ga. I wouldn't be as surprised if it had been done in the 4ga "elephant gun" category, but I've never seen one.

I'd say spend the extra money and get the grizzly knife grinder since you already know you want to and can make knives.

1) I'd spend more on the belt sander/grinder if I was seriously getting into knife making, which I don't plan to. I think it's a ton of fun and I definitely want to make more, but not enough to spend more money.

2) Yeah, Jerry posted a new thread that it's already being field tested, and to look out for it next year...

3) I really need to feel and shoot them first, but right now it's a tossup between two subcompacts: G26 and XD9. I'm leaning more towards the XD because it's slightly cheaper and supposedly has a crisper trigger, but I don't know how I feel about the grip saftey. And I like how it looks a little better and I'm digging the OD color option.

W Greener did a martini henry action single shot 12G....became popular as a Howda Pistol when sawn down on the stock and barrel...you can still get them if you look....

Jim, on the 9mm v .45 ACP you ought to try a double stacked .45 before thinking they are too big in the grip...I had a no frills Para Ordinace P14 which are available at sensible money second hand with fixed sights...it would be my choice in the USA...and my hands are not huge. I combined parts from a Colt Gold Cup I had to make a comp gun out of it but out of the box the P14 was great as was.

If it is too big then stick with a single stack 1911...

IMO there is a lot of difference between the .45 and 9mm....and I have to use 9mm in a pistol...privately I would much prefer .45....there is a load of evidence on this if you want to research it....since 1911 and before this with the .455 Webley in Africa....their is no substitute for large bore stopping power in FMJ ammo.

I try to retain a need for an entry shotgun if I can.....that or a GPMG....the 7.62mm v 5.56mm is the same thing...personally I am all for our change to the .338 LM and as a back up I would rather have an AR180 with the M203...or better still a G3 and a M203....than anything in 5.56....never tried a M1A1 in 30-06 but that might be better still.

Personally I think the US Army had a better weapons system than anyone back in the pre M16 days....you never heard about stopping power issues then....

I like my SA XD9SC. What don't you like about the grip safety?

The XD is the first gun with a grip safety I don't mind it on. I can't stand grip safeties. I cannot explain why, I just do.
