I just inherited a pair of Koflach "Para" mountaineering boots. ( image). Not sure that I actually need them, but they seem wonderfully built for ... whatever it is they are good for. They have two different layers. First you tie on the liner, which is VERY thick, firm and cushy. Then you slip into the shell, which is all a solid piece of plastic and absolutely waterproof. They feel kind of like a ultralight pair of ski boots. The shank is basically a steel bar, you can easily stand on toe. And the boot really wants you to keep your knees bent. Never had anything like this. Apparently they are aimed at ice climbing. I have had some of these...they are brilliant for Mountaineering....I used them with Yeti Gaiters by Berghaus...superb boots for what they do...if you are staying in an Alpine Hut the inners are great as slippers around the hut or simply if taking the Muddy Boots off before driving you can use the inners for driving the car. Being plastic outers they are totally water proof and can work like a pair of Welly's with the gaiters on. They don't flex like leather but as a result you can climb very well in them and they take crampon use much better than a leather boot. About 15 years ago was when I last went Mountaineering and they were considered the Rolls Royce of Plastic Boots. You can walk quite well in them as well...just like a Rigid leather boot but half the weight.

It's nice to hear from somebody who has actually used them in their proper habitat. I don't do icy mountains, but they do seem quite well suited to it. The crampon use makes sense, since they are so rigid, it would be very easy to distribute your weight and load the points however you needed. The knees-forward cant seems ideal for toeing your way up a slope. That must be why the perimeter of the lower has a rough texture molded into the plastic, better attachment for crampons.
I was thinking of taking them out just to see if they work as a walking and snowshoeing boot. Like I said, I inherited these, didn't buy them myself. No idea what they are good for.

Sorry I didn't show back up last night. I went to feed the horses and wound up taking a little late night ride. It was such a beautiful night out last night I just couldn't resist it!

Hey Bob,
I just talked to Ragnar and he said his site should be back up anytime. His internet provider went belly up and didn't notify anybody so it kind threw everything into a tailspin. He said to just keep checking it, and that he expects it to be back up by tonight at the latest.
In the mean time if you need to talk to him, his number is (716)731-3715.
