leg press and squat are too different to compare. i leg press 855 for eight reps, and i've broken 1000 in the past but it's not part of my regular routine yet. i can't squat half that for one rep.

the squat, along with other exercises like the almighty bench press, is an exercise that's simultaneously worshipped and mocked. guys throw four plates on the bar, then 'squat' it with their legs a mile apart only going down about five inches, leaning forward and pushing from the toes.

push from your heels, feet beneath you, toes forward, chest up, and go straight down. many will find themselves struggling with half the weight they're currently lifting if they did it this way. one more reason the smith rocks.

now i want one. maybe next decade.

smiths are nice, they and freeweights have their pros and cons....i used to include both into my routine. but then again i always tried to use proper technique and quality reps vs just pushing weight. in my prime i maxed a squat at 560 in a comp....i miss those days <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

A real "legal" squat with much weight is very hard compared to machiness. Leg press machines and all of the squat machines are great especially if your working out by yourself. I feel safer with them anyway.
