That does sound like a lot of work, but sounds so good too.
Beer, I love beer. Beer is good. Did I mention I like beer? Well, just in case I did not mention it I like beer. If there could only be two beverages in this world it would be water and beer. You know, you have to have water to make beer!

Thanks. The handles are contoured some - not so much at the pommel. They're 1/4" so there's not a plethora of material there to work with. It's actually pretty comfortable. If they'd been 5/16" thk, I'd have made them more oval or egg shaped. It's always hard to tell when you've taken enough off the handle, but it's very easy to see when you've taken too much off. I've made a few like this. This one is a little larger than the rest. My HF sander has about had enough.
That's good to know, the micarta I'm ordering will be 1/4" as well and I wasn't sure if that would be thick and comfortable enough. Same knife: ![[Linked Image from i247.photobucket.com]](http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg154/lisalaz00/IMG_2062.jpg)

Speaking of bison, or buffalo for those of us in the western frontier, has anyone ever hunted them? When I say hunted them I mean in the wide open where they are not used to being fenced in or use to humans looking at them?
I have always wanted to hunt one but I want to do it in the wild, have the mount on a wall, and a robe made out of the hide--not to mention enough meat to last the year.

Thanks for the picture, that gives me a better idea of how much material I have to work with.

1/4" is fine for smaller handles like what I've done before, but for handles larger (wider) than the one above, it might be better with 5/16" or a whittled-down 3/8". 3/8" is pretty thick stuff for big paws. I guess it all comes down to personal preference.

I'm angling for a new grinder - kalamazoo, maybe
I'm scared that it's only rated at 1/3 hp. The HF is rated 1/3 hp as well and is waaaay underpowered for knife grinding.

I've got a friend who shot one. There really aren't any "wild" buffalo left I don't think. It was a cheap hunt IMHO, less than a thousand bucks if I remember correctly. Getting that hide tanned and meat processed would be more expensive than that.

Yeah, processing, tanning, and mounting would be expensive. I have heard that there are some free ranging buffalo ranches in ND, MT, WY but it is costly.
I have a rifle BPCR already, so I just thought it might be a once in a lifetime deal.
It all started when I found a buffalo skull as a kid, it was a younger buffalo based on the size of the skull but there is a large caliber hole in the head--almost like it was put down after being put on the ground. I will have to take a pic of it one day this week.

Nice thing about the kalamazoo is that it can be turned horizontally, which I have found very useful. Yea but still that 1/3 HP isn't going to be the strongest.
