Hey Snotpig! We're at my in-laws for a few days - through Easter. Basically a weekend of eating, sleeping, and goofing off.

Sounds awesome, PK. I think my whole fam is coming into town Sunday. It sounds like my wife has planned an Easter egg hunt for me and the rest of the kids.

We'll be doing an Easter Egg hunt Sunday as well, providing the weather cooperates.

Sounds like all the kids are going to have a blast. I remember back in elementary school, the staff would put them all over the place before lunch and we'd go find them. I've never sprinted so hard in life to beat some of the other kids, haha.

It's a lot easier now that I out weigh most of the kids by at least 100-130 pounds. I clean house. They are no match for me.

No, seriously, they should have a lot of fun.

I'm contemplating one of these:

I'm still unsure if it has enough power for knife making.

I was clearing some dead branches from my persimmon and apple tree in the backyard and I came across an old butcher knife. My family must have used it at least 10 years ago to clear some branches. It was pretty rusty and the edge had huge chips (probably from rocks).

The butcher knife my family is currently using in the kitchen has wood handles falling apart and some cheap steel (very brittle stuff). The one I found felt like a really good knife. It was thick, heavy, full tang, metal handles with a dragon on each side. I thought it's time time to retire the old one and replace it with the one I found. Took me about 30 minutes to restore it. Cleaned, polished, and put a scary sharp convex edge on it. I kept it pretty thick because my family chops with it pretty hard and I don't know how well the steel will hold up yet, but the steel "felt" good when I was sharpening it.

My friend just bought the Kalamazoo 1x42. He still new and hasn't used it yet so I can't really say much, but I feel that's the one to get if you want a 1x42. It has a smaller wheel (better for the grooves), rubber wheels (better to lean against), and capabilities to flip horizontal (profiling handles and blade shape); all things I found VERY useful at Ban's shop. But you are right, it's still a 1/3 HP motor. I think paired up with a bandsaw, the 1x42 kalamazoo would be great.

I don't know much about 2x48 grinders, do they sell premium belts for it? If so it might be okay, but I'd I recall 1x48 and 2x72 having the most variety. Of course you can always get custom belts.
