Dice - Reading law? That sucks. Had to do that when i was trying to figure out what knives I could legally bring into Canada. Gives me a headache. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
Its all I do - day in and day out!
Montana criminal law is quite frustrating for LEO's. Every case, our supreme court says "The Federal system does X, BUT WE REFUSE TO MARCH LOCK STEP WITH THE US SUPREME COURT, so we will screw the cops and do Y." (they really do say the 'lock step' bit - very often.)
We can't do 1/2 of the 'stuff' that cops can in most places in the country. The case I'm reading now is a DUI stop - cop is taping - reads miranda rights - guy says "well... I want to address someone" "who" "I don't exactly know yet." "who do you want to talk to?" "I am not... I haven't decided yet." Then he spills the beans. US Supreme Court says that you must request counsel - specifically. Montana says "Nope! He must have meant he wanted an attorney! The taped statement is excluded."
Madness...
