I'm going to try the mouse pad method but I want a good sharpening system for V grind stuff anyways. What do you guys think is better. The Spyderco system or something from Lansky?

Lansky is more precise and the Sharpmaker is faster. Spyderco started out making sharpeners not knives so they know what they are doing but if you are a total newb go with the Lansky.

Like Unsub said! I like the Lansky, it's simple and it works- VERY well. It will razor your blades consistantly, leave nice well finished edges and not mark up the knife sides if you put a bit of cloth in the clamp. Hard to beat it really.

It takes a lot of sandpaper though. You might be better off with a long piece of emery paper especially for big knives like the DF.
Cold One ,you might want to try finishing your knives with a leather strop?

That's the lee valley order! some special sand papers as well as a strop and compound! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
