LOL, this is so true. It's gonna be awfully fun working my way to the poor house, though.

So I just spent the last hour or so trying to put a better edge on my High Street. It's got some convex to it now, but still isn't where I'd like it to be. Gonna take a lot more work to get there.

I think I will get some even rougher grit sandpaper for the reprofiling. It takes too long starting at 320 grit.

Mr. Easy
I understand all too well how it feels to have to get rid of a blade that you like in order to afford a blade that you THINK you will like more. A short list of knives I've sold to pay for another knife/bills...Busse SFNO LE, Busse Skinny Ash, Busse NMFBM, Busse BAD, and a Busse Sus Scrofa. I miss just about every one of those blades and wish I could have hung onto them. I think you will regret it if you get rid of your SOD Le...so hang onto it if you can

Geez, Double M, that must be a really messed up edge if you still see a long way to go. Was it concave or something?

It was ground at about a 35 degree angle, which is pretty much the widest edge angle most commercial sharpening sytems would do. I'm shooting for something more like 15 degrees, so there is a LOT of steel to remove. I'm also reprofiling the edge, to go from a flat to convex edge, so I've got a lot of shoulder to remove.

I wish I had a belt sander for this, but I am going to learn by hand first, then graduate to a sander at some point in the future. The whole concave/convex thing is throwing me off a little bit. You used both to describe one reprofiling, Double M, didn't you, just now?

I did say concave, but I meant to say convex - I edited my post to correct it.

Mag, I have no doubt I could do this a lot quicker on a belt sander, but I like the hands on feel of hand sharpening, especially on a small knife like this. With the number of blades I have to sharpen after last weekend, maybe I should think about using a belt sander, but I'm still a fan of doing it the old fashioned way.

Whew, thanks for the clarification. It had my head spinning a little to try to picture how that edge was coming together After that chop-off, I can imagine that you have a few edges to clean up. I know your edges come out pretty precise. It all adds up to a lot of work. Hope you at least have fun or relaxation doing it.
