I went to a BBQ and the only beer left was this bud light with lime flavoring, nasty! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbdn.gif" alt="" /> I knew it'd be bad before I even open it.

Six hours worth of data collected last night - all of it is crap. I love science <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/banghead.gif" alt="" />

What kind of data?

I do measurements of the thickness of thin-film polymer glasses. Generally the films are between about 400 and 1000 nanometers thick, and their thickness changes by a fraction of a nanometer in the course of a six hour experiment.

To put that in perspective, a human hair is about 60,000 nanometers thick, and a DNA molecule is about 2 nanometers thick. That means we're measuring thickness changes that are LESS than the width of a single strand of DNA.

The measurements are pretty sensitive. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" />

May I ask what application the polymer is intended? Is this QC work ?

Pure research - I'm a physicist, so I study the physical properties of the things, and let the engineers figure out how to apply what I learn <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

That said, the polymers we are using are ones that are very standard in industry - stuff like polystyrene, polysulfone, etc... They have a lot of applicability in all kinds of places in industry - chemistry, solar power, nanofabrication, etc etc etc. And understanding their physical properties can help develop ways to make them more durable, more stable, and so on.

I do none of those things. I just study the physics of it. Like I said, I leave it to the engineers to worry about applications <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I enjoy it more when the data doesn't go to crap overnight <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />
