Why is it crap? Cause it changed or the way the test carried out?

Neither - environmental noise.
This stuff is OBNOXIOUSLY sensitive. A change in the temperature in the room of a tenth of a degree can ruin your data. Construction a block away from the building can ruin your data. The moon going into the wrong phase while venus is doing whatever venus does can ruin your data.
The measurement itself is so sensitive that the slightest vibration or temperature change can move the equipment enough to measure a "change" that's far bigger than what the film is actually doing.

So there you have it. It's conclusive Mr Engineers. This stuff is Supper sensative, so don't use it as a new building material. On the the hand you can use it to transmit communication in new divices...lol. Sounds like you need an isolated island to work on.

Preferably a nice tropical one... of course, then the wind would screw it up
It's not that the stuff itself is super sensitive, it's that the property we are measuring, and the way that property changes, are super sensitive. So, for certain applications it doesn't matter, and for other applications it might. By understanding and testing models which PREDICT the rate at which the thickness changes, we can potentially give insight into how to either enhance or suppress the changes we measure, as needed. A change that's incredibly small over a six hour time span can become quite large over the lifetime of a device that's used in real world settings for months or years. We just have to be more accurate in our measurements, so we don't have to wait years for results

M/M - I hope that you and the engineers can develop some thin-film solar technology that is AFFORDABLE to us poor old ranchers and farmers!
