Hello everyone. First post here in the Yard.

Currently the only knives I own are kitchen cutlery and I hunger for steel I can use outside. After much research I think i have made the decision to make a couple SYs my first real knife purchases. I am looking at a versatile big knife and EDC knife combo pack for when I camp and hike.

The one that seem like the best fit for my large blade desires is the Yard Guard. Big but not just a chopper. With the Res. handles and high quality steel, I think it will please the knife gods.

For my EDC fixed blade I was looking at the Yard Keeper. The problem is, I can't find much information on the specs of it. Can anyone provide some info on when it was produced, original pricing, metallurgy, LE or standard editions, etc.

If anyone has input on my choices and/or suggestions for other affordable high quality knives, please let me know.

Thanks for help and I hope to join you all soon in the Yard officially with my first purchase!

Welcome to the Yard!

The main scrapyard page will tell you some about what models have been out, about SR77 steel, etc - and there are a lot of guys here at the forum that can answer those steel questions better than I if you're looking for more.

The Dogfather LE is coming out TOMORROW NIGHT, you're just in time! The price of $175 is about 30-40 less than anyone had thought it would be. Don't miss out on this one!

Again, welcome!

I did read about the DFLE being released. It sure is a beautiful thing. I wish I could afford to buy my user blades and some steel for the safe too. I hope you all get one and chop some mother nature for me.

Welcome to the Yard Kwantum!

Your timing is great as the Dog Father Limited Edition is due to be released tomorrow! There should be an announcement tonight with a ball park time.

The Yard Keeper was only released in a Limited Edition model & was originally for Blade Show 2007. You can find them on the secondary market though.

Both blades are made of SR-77 steel. You can find info about the knife construction here:
http://scrapyardknives.com/tech.htm

I am afraid that I do not have the specific specs on that blade handy though.

Cheers,
Chris

Welcome to the Yard, Kwantum.
The Yard Keeper is really a nice knife too, but a wee bit too thick for my taste in a utility knife (unless you send it to Horn Dog for his state-of-the-art blade reprofile <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif" alt="" /> ). I'd suggest you look at something like a Swamp Rat Howling Rat Little Mischief (HRLM) instead. It may be the best 4" utility knife ever made.

Any idea how thick it actually is?
