I have batoned a folder CRKT through hickory. Took a lot of abuse. The lock was worn a little bit, but it was fine. With proper technique, it should not be a concern. Nice car BTW dl351.

Don't worry Brian! Batoning isn't the right way to use a knife and those other people are right!.......................................................................................................................... Because they have CRAP KNIVES!!! Baton with it! Chop with it and abuse the hell out of it not because you can do it, but because these knives were made for it!!!
Great video! I love the dog!

It's really interesting how Batoning has become so popular now. I for one think it's certainly a good way to separate the crap from the good stuff.

Nice instructional video and a very handy notch.
I completely missed the dog taking the baton the first time I watched it... classic!

I have never been afraid to baton with my knives. In fact, the first day my dogfather showed up, I took it out back to plow through some frozen wood It is my normal splitting method for smaller sized wood.
With a smaller knife, batoning is just such a fast an convenient way to make notches too. Even your classic square notch can be made faster, and usually with better flats than trying to carve them.
I mess around with this stuff all the time. Not only making cooking cranes and such, but even simpler things like a stick with a notch to grab a hot pot off the fire.

I batton wood for my woodstove all the time ! Some people say you should use an axe instead and that is what I sometimes do but I find it a lot more controlled using my knife especially when I am trying to break it down into really small kindling ,you just cannot really do that with an axe !!!!

You do it just like this: Splitting wood small with an ax I think it is very easy to do with a knife, but I would not say that it is not easy with an ax either. I heat with a woodstove too I can't live without it
