I posted this on the other forum. I had a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY unusual occurence today! Dead Dogfather!! No worries, It appears that we must have had one bad plate of steel with air pockets that were nearly dead center in the steel. . . No one's fault except for the steel mill who let it pass. . . Your knife is covered by the bullet proof Scrap Yard warranty, eventhough it is second hand and modified I will replace it...send it in Dan I am not even remotly suprized bu Dan's words, that is how the Scrap Yard Knife CO. rolls.

Poop happens to even the best knives on the planet. Somethings are just out of your control. What I think is interesting is that this is not a catastrophic failure. The Dog is not broke just wounded it looks like it will still bring you home.

The fact that Dan is replacing it with out even batting an eye say's it all about the company.

I was just gonna loan it to a very large friend who has lots of downed limbs on his property. didn't bother me when it broke, but if it had happened to him he would have been mortified!

I thought the knives were x-rayed or something so that faulty ones would be found ?

On this website it says:
"Scrap Yard Knife Co. uses a specialized liquid penetration inspection, which reveals surface breaking flaws by bleedout of fluorescent dye from the flaw."
So no x-rays, but they do check for defects.

Yeah that's it, I shoulda looked first, here it is...
Scrap Yard Knife Co. uses a specialized liquid penetration inspection, which reveals surface breaking flaws by bleedout of fluorescent dye from the flaw.
The technique is based on the ability of a liquid to be drawn into a "clean" surface breaking flaw by what is known as capillary action. (Capillary action is the force that is a resultant of adhesion, cohesion, and surface tension in liquids which are in contact with solids, as in a capillary tube.) After a period of time known as the "dwell", excess surface penetrant is removed and a developer applied. This acts as a "blotter". It draws the penetrant from the flaw to reveal its presence. Ultraviolet "black light" is used in darkened conditions to view the colored penetrants for any cracks, fissures, or other flaws.
What does this mean to you? It means your Scrap Yard knife will be free from microscopic cracks and fissures, invisible to the human eye under normal conditions. Whereas other blades, manufactured by other companies, are sent to customers with "unseen" surface flaws that "crack" under pressure, each Scrap Yard knife is individually inspected to be free from any defects.
So how did that one leak out ?

The flaw was under the surface so there was no flaw in the surface until it some of the outer metal was removed either by the modding or hitting the branch but most likely a bit of both.
