I am not a big fan of batoning, I prefer hatchets or folding saws for cutting through wood. Agreed! However, there are times when all you have is a knife and the need to make a fire. So batoning is a fairly useful way to split wood especially for medium to small knife sizes.

nice work diceman
i find it slower than chopping with a khuk or hatchet but it also causes less damage. to often i chop through something and stick the blade tip into the ground

If you only knew how many times I've heard that. Let me guess. This makes one.

impressive work andy. do you think the rat would perform better if it was flat ground? Well, it might roll the edge more, being thinner. I’ve had some light rolls in a few places already as it is. But, I do stuff with it like baton huge knotty frozen seasoned hardwood logs. Many were so tough the knife got stuck, and I beat it will all my strength until I was exhausted and had to admit defeat to the log and back the knife out.
