Agreed! However, there are times when all you have is a knife and the need to make a fire. So batoning is a fairly useful way to split wood especially for medium to small knife sizes.

nice work diceman


i find it slower than chopping with a khuk or hatchet but it also causes less damage. to often i chop through something and stick the blade tip into the ground

Well, it might roll the edge more, being thinner. I’ve had some light rolls in a few places already as it is. But, I do stuff with it like baton huge knotty frozen seasoned hardwood logs. Many were so tough the knife got stuck, and I beat it will all my strength until I was exhausted and had to admit defeat to the log and back the knife out.
