Imagine a CPM10V blade edge with S7 on the outside. Check out the stats on this graph. The 10V and the S7 are almost polar opposite of each other.

It almost seems that 10V and S7 are meant to be laminated together.

10V and S7 are both amazing in their own way. But, although combining them may sound like the perfect recipe for "ULTRA" steel. It may not be as great as you would assume.

Consider: that if you wanted the S7 on the outside for "toughness" - I assume you might be wanting to chop with it or similar, but you would still have chips on the 10V edge to contend with - and a steel that is VERY hard to sharpen at the core and with chips.

And there wouldn't be much to gain by adding S7 to a non-abuse slicer.

The two steels are too extreme and would cost to much to combine for just a mid-size casual user.

But, maybe I am missing something?

I have seen that graph before and cannot really believe it to be accurate.
Take a look at the wear resistance for S7, we all know that it is better than that.....unless Dans heat treat has made that much difference and increased the wear resistance and dropped the toughness slightly !!!

What's wrong with D2 or 440C for little yard knives?

sr77 is just perfect as is, for knives designed to beat trees to death..

It is a crucible graph so it should be fairly accurate. I know what you mean though Pitman because I had a heck of a time reprofiling my YKLE even with a coarse diamond hone so it certainly seems like it has decent edge retention.
My best guess is the modification that is done to make S7 SR77 bumps up the edge retention. Probably with a bit more carbon. Also the Busse heat treat can only help.

Knifeguy you are probably right about 10V and S7 but I won't let reality spoil my dream.
There are tons of good reasons why you can't get good results just throwing stuff together from a graph.

One of the most interesting steels on the graph is 440C. It has always been one of my favourite steels and this graph shows why. It is very close to D2 with just a tiny bit less toughness but way way more corrosion resistance. It is an awesome steel for certain purpose. It is hard to work with though.
