i have been known to lug a bunch of unnecessary crap with me into the woods and for that i use a Blackhawk S.O.F. Ruck.takes a licken and keeps on ticken. i dont know if their is such a thing as a "comfortable" pack when your lugging 100 pounds.i also got something called an "ALI-PAD" from HSGI.it makes the pack more comfortable but it also makes it weigh more although it can carry two 100oz water bladders. here's a pic of my pack with the HSGI...[which stands for high speed gear inc.].. here's a pic of the pack by itself.dont mind the blood stains. and here's a pic of my scrawny [censored] waring the pack as you can see, this one will hold a whole bunch of crap.its probably got around 80 pounds in it in this pick.it will take 100 with no problem.taking it comfortably is another story.again, the ALI-PAD helps but at the same time adds more weight and costs about an extra $90.00. honestly,if i was you and could afford it i would go with something from KIFARU all day.i might even try and sell this one just to be able to get myself a KIFARU pack.i never ownwd one but i know the best when i see it.do yourself a favor and skip th BS.get a KIFARU even if you have to save up some $$$$.

even with all that talking i forgot to mention that it is a good pack.i have my own opinions on blackhawk but i have to give them credit where credit is due.this pack is tough as hell and a handy little [email]b@$tard[/email] too.
blackhawk is asking almost $500.00 at their web-site.i got it for $300.00 at OPTACTICAL.COM
they have great packs and even better prices.
have you looked at TACTICAL TAILOR ???
if my next pack isnt a KIFARU it will be a TACTICAL TAILOR MALICE PACK.check it out for yourself.
for the record i have as many packs as i do knives.i collect 2 things.packs made of 1000 denier cordura nylon and hard use knives.....what a dork.
good luck

I seriously question the advice you've been given. Sounds like someone went a bit overboard. I guess you should contact the army as this weight is trained with often, it is possible and is done. That said anyone who trys who is not use to it will get hurt. Was not to be taken literally. Hound

SAR:
I was questioning the advice of the scout troop physical instructor, not the advice of you or the board. I think we're all in agreement that extreme-load training can be done, and shoud be done for S&R, military, public safety, etc.
My point is that I doubt it is sound advice for an adult accompanying a scout troop on a canoe trip to be aspiring to 5 miles @ 120 lbs.
Make sense? Are we good?
Mark.

lets pretend that someone is ultra fit....i mean super duper fit and can carry any amount of weight without their legs and back giving out.they are still always going to have one problem.those [censored] shoulder straps are going to cut into your arms and shoulders so bad.a waist belt can only help so much.
i would definitely test this weight out first before you go off on a scout trip.

I won't actually be carrying 120lb. on the trip, just around 80lb. This heavy is just to get ready .

Mark. We good <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />. If you need to carry 80 I suggest starting at 50 and working up Hound

The best big pack going is the Berghaus Vulcan. It'll carry 100 litres (that's huge!) and it is comfy even when it weighs a ton... They will also survive being thrown out of a Hercules at altitude (without a parachute)- according to military sources! (It didn't burst but needed digging out of the crater it made.)

I only carry about 20 pounds for a 3 day trip, but then again I am a mad man. 20 lbs. Still sounds like a lot to me. Unless it is winter. Winter gear adds quite a bit of weight.

They are probably including part of the canoe in the weight. I would buy a set of wheels for the canoe. They make they for kayaks as well. Turns the canoe into a wheelbarrow. Beats the heck out of carrying the stuff. You can't portage anyway if you don't have a good path.
