It's one of the better stainless steels, used by Jerry before INFI was found.. It's tough (not sr77 tough!) can take rockwell 61 and is good all round stuff. Great for smaller sharp slicer knives. sr77 or INFI are probably better for big 'uns! (Due to ATS34's lesser impact toughness- due to the chrome content perhaps?)

"Great for smaller sharp slicer knives."

I have always been a fan of ATS34 for the slicers. I carry an Al Mar Mini SERT (hand ground, #85 of 100. mics in at 0.1175") auto regularly and it stays sharp for delicate cutting and slicing.

If you're not pissed off you're not paying attention.

Thats interesting, I had forgotten about the ATS34. I haven't seen any in my digging but I will have to dig deeper, who knows what I will find. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Dan

Well I hope in all your digging that you don't come across the body of Jimmy Hoffa.

uh oh. look at that emoticon. he's already got something that we're all gonna freak for.
Maybe you'll find a piece long enough to make a bowie knife! Stainless steel that holds an edge. Or is ATS34 too brittle for a big knife?
Hi Mr. Ross!
Nope ATS-34 is most defiantly not soft for a chopper. The avatar I use has a Dog Father and my Custom made chopper in solid ATS-34. It is a ravenous beast when it comes to trees. I have downed many a surprised tree in the woods by my home. It still sports a mirror finish and touches up to hair popping sharp in under a minute on my Edge Select 120.
ATS-34 would be a sweet score for Dan especially if he used the "Family" secret for heat treating the blade. I'm in for one!!

Peace.

Could ATS34 be Dan's INFI?...
