I'll second the recommendation for the Swedish 'Light My Fire' FireSteels given above.
I had rainwalker make a kydex sheath for my DMLE that also holds one of the 'Army Model' FireSteels. Together, the DMLE and the FireSteel make a great camping/hiking combo.

i really like the tape idea for dealing with the wind. i usually pile my firewood in a perimeter to block the wind.

i usually pile my firewood in a perimeter to block the wind. You can also dig a small hole and start the fire in the bottom.

For 35 MM film canisters-I get mine at a drug store that process film--and they are free. I read almost exactly the same thing in a posting online, but I tried a couple places with no luck. Sam's Club processes film, but they said that they don't get much 35mm, and they use those canisters for chemical tests on their equipment. Walgreen's said that somebody else had come in earlier and gotten the few they had. I bought 146 oval Advantix canisters and lids for about 9 cents each after shipping -- I think they'll be more comfortable in a pocket than the round canisters, and it was worth it to me not to continue searching. I'm not sure that I'll ever use all those canisters, but I'm sure I'll find other uses for some of them.

Hi, I tried to strike a firesteel with my great new SS6, but with the coating and the rounded edges it did not work. But with the choil it worked well. Do some of you have other experiences? Ede Ps: sorry if my english is not perfect, I`m german.

Ede - Howdy and Welcome to the Scrap Yard! I have found that the best item for sparking is a broken hacksaw blade. The end with a hole allows for attaching it to the steel, and if you sharpen the other end it provides an extra small cutting edge. We're happy that you joined us!! Tom

Thank you. I will try out the Hacksaw thing, but I´m happy to know, that it also works with the Blade, in the case you have nothing else. Ede

It has been said here already by andy, I like to move the steel itself across the striker. I use a knife instead of a hack saw. it works better for me. it is an old carbon steel old timer, but it sounds like there are a lot of ways to get it to work.
