Got my new SERE 2000 in today. Much more rugged than I thought it would be. Thick stainless steel liners (no holes). Much beefier than my Rat Trap, but a little smaller. I got a cheap Benchmade Pikka lockback, too. They threw in free shipping, a free Gerber pocket sharpener, and a free CRKT Edgie. Pics tomorrow maybe.
the pikas are nice, first gen or 2nd gen?

the byrds are a good buy. they're fully capable, if less refines than than seki and colorado spydies.

i've had a few kershaws and they are great knives, but had better experiences overall with spyderco. the $30 kershaw storm 2 is a large, usa made, frame locking, recurved 13C26 folder which i think holds the benchmark for value priced knives. i actually prefer it to my JYD2. leek rocks em both, gotta get the d2 model.
id steer clear of the sttorm 2 i hate mine it just wont stay tightened and the rear "plug" under the clip isint keyed into the frame and the griptape scrapes your hand whn you try to get your hand deeper into your pocket

Here is the Benchmade "Redbox" Pika II. Steel is 9Cr13CoMoV, whatever that is. It has reinforced nylon handle with stainless steel liners. Here it is second from bottom with my trusty old Bucklite, CS Voyager, and Spyderco Endura. The action is not as smooth as the CS or Spyderco. More like the Buck. It feels good in the hand, but not as good as the Spyderco does.

Here is my new Al Mar SERE 2000:

[Linked Image from i173.photobucket.com]
It has thick stainless steel liners.

Unlike every other linerlock I have, this one is for point up carry.

Nice beefy lock.

Here it is with some of my other large linerlocks.

You can see here that the SERE has thicker liners than the Rat Trap or DejaVoo.

The knife is fairly heavy. Seems rugged. It is most like the Ontario RAT 1 folder in construction and size. It is very smooth. Almost on par with the Benchmade Dejavoo.

The Pika II seems to be very well made for the price, but then it is made in China. The edge is not so great, but I can fix that, provided the steel is good. It has a needle sharp point. The action is not as smooth as Cold Steel or Spyderco, more like a Buck lockback. The handle is comfortable, and it has stainless liners. Overall, pretty good for the money if the steel holds up.

well I've had 440 chip on me alot.
(kershaws)
so I like to avoid it, even if it has a good heat treat.
there are so many great steels so... I don't have much of a problem.
logan, I thought you loved that storm II?
if it won't stay tightened you might want to see what kershaw says about it.

i had two storm 2's. the first hasd gritty action. the second was perfect.

i also scraped the 'tractek' inserts down a little. that sandpaper was a bit too aggressive. i'd get it again if i came past the old grind.

I like that Al Mar, Vic. I really like where the clip is located too. Looks like a very functional and easy to carry folder.

That JYD looks nice too, except for the clip...
I've seen several Kershaws I really liked until I saw the pocket clip.
