<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> True DAT!!!! (I love my Endura 4 <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> )

But still, Aluminum is sort of specifically used on Autos... well not sort of specifically... I actually don't think I've ever seen an OTS without aluminum as a frame.

Steel and titanium are used on framelocks because the lock has to be a durable spring. I've never seen an aluminum spring. In my limited experience in working with aluminum I have found that it takes a set pretty easily.

For an auto where a simple durable housing is needed, an aluminum frame would work fine. While I don't own any autos, I suspect autos are high margin items built with profit margins forefront in the mind of the makers.

I figured that for frames. Aluminum is strong but not "springy", so to speak. Never seen an Aluminum can spring back after it's been squashed. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

And yes Autos are mainly made for Military/Police personnel who aren't going to spend and exorbitant amount of money on knives.

But if you say "a simple durable housing is needed" why not just plain simple stainless steel? It's cheaper, more durable (in finish mainly), and has a bit of springiness just in case. It's by no means lighter, but what kind of military/police personnel would care when their already carrying a good amount of gear. A half pound wouldn't do much at all.

Also thanks for your guys' response.

Sharp I think it's just the opposite, actually. Police officers have to carry a ton of crap on their belts and lightening the load would be a big priority for me if I had to lug that all that stuff.

Carrying a pistol, baton, mace/taser, two spare mags, flashlight, knife, and cuffs all day would wear me out.

Bottom line, just like when backpacking, you're gonna feel every ounce by the end of the day.

Here are some of my big folders. I put in the Mud Puppy for size comparison.

This one is so bad. Since the whole blade is covered when closed, I sharpened the swedge on top. Good knife for downtown.

This 5" Vaquero is wicked, too. Those serrations really bite! I had a 6" Grande, but the handle is huge, so I got a "smaller" one.

These are practical EDCs for hiking or more rugged outdoor use. I really like the Rijbak.

The RAT folder is nice, too.

You mean the Spyderco Military? I have carried it, but that's about all. It is sweet.

Kraz,

Thanks for your response.

Bld522,

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif" alt="" /> I completely forgot about William and Henry conversions.

Thanks.

Well, I guess that answers my question. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
