I remember being 5 or so, begging my dad for a pocket knife, so he found an old cheap folder in his room, went to the fire place, and took the edge completely off of it on the bricks, and gave it to me. Then, the next day, he saw me trying to whittle at some wood, so he sharpened it back up again, and that would probably be when the addiction started...

I remember returning pop bottles for the money and saving up enough to buy a Yellow Delrin Case knife from Ace Hardware. Two blade Trapper model circa 1966.I was so proud of myself,walking the case after case of pop bottles to the store. It took a while, over a few weeks but it was worth it. I remember I cut somthing I shouldn't have and Mom took the knife away.
I swiped it back from her secret hiding place a few days later and never let her see it again.
Lost it all by myself when I was ready though. I was nine when I got my first blade.

POP - I did the same thing returning pop bottles, only I used my bicycle basket! A neighbor kid had me helping him pickup bottles from a nearby hotel, and we would take them about a mile to a liquor store for the refund money. Yeah, they weigh a lot less. I’m old enough I still remember bottles. I remember getting bottles out of machines when I was younger. And having to bring them back to the store for the deposit when we got a pack from the store.
