Yep. The colors match the knife quite nicely.

Go for it Stabby.

There's a bit of an investment in tools to get started and just like with anything practice makes perfect, so start simple. Be patient and careful.

I've got many years of experience and quite a bit of an investment in tools and equipment, but I didn't start out that way, and I wouldn't dare show off some of the stuff I made starting out around 30 years ago.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'll help if I can.

Thanks. I figure I can get by for now with a basic gouge and a good awl. What kind of leather should I be using?

To begin with, I'd say whatever is fairly inexpensive in a medium thickness. An 8 to 10 once should work fine for most things. Sometimes you can even get already dyed scraps that would be fine for practice, or bundles of scraps. I use vegetable tanned full sides for most of what I make, but that would cost a lot more. Look for a clearance rack, the local Tandy usually has clearance stuff, and every once in a while they have something worth while in that.

You might check and see if there's a Saddle and Tack shop in your area too.

Here is one I just finished for my DMDC. Not beautiful, but very functional and solid. The only tools I use are a box cutter, hand drill, 2 needles and a cheap snap tool I got at WalMart. I color the edge with shoe polish. It's fun if nothing else. I do want to get some fancy stuff from Rainwalker some day though. I think this is my 4th or 5th sheath. I get scraps of dyed leather at a local leather shop. Based on the time it takes me to make these ugly ones, the beauty and craftmanship such as that produced by pros like Rainwalker is worth every penny.

Tandy actually lists a store here in New Orleans, but its called The Leather Factory instead of Tandy Leather?
