CHICAGO — A 150-pound cougar was gunned down by Chicago police Monday after it was loose in a residential area on the city's North Side.

Several residents reported seeing the cat early Monday and the officer shot the animal in an alley, police said.

Authorities said the cougar will be checked for any markings, chips or tags that would show if it was someone's pet rather than a wild animal.

Confirmed sightings of cougars, also known as mountain lions or pumas, are rare in Illinois but authorities in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette said they received several reports of cougar sightings during the weekend.

pity they had to shoot it <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbdn.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I heard about that, it is a shame that they had to shoot it.

We've had a Black Bear supposedly running around in a couple of the counties adjacent to mine, it's got me keeping a close eye out for signs. I've lost a few cats recently, but that might be our not quite so friendly neighborhood Bobcat, although I have no problems sharing my neck of the woods with a Bobcat or two unless they start getting too friendly. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

That's pretty dang scary.

I used to live in Chicago, about 8-10 years ago. I've completely forgotten were I lived though. I lived within walking distance of the University of Chicago, though. I was right next to the university.

The closest thing that I've come to seeing a cougar are the cougar tracks that I took pics of in the snow a little while back.

poor thing... stumbled into the wrong spot. too bad they couldn't try a live capture. seems like it was trying to evade people more than eat them.

I read they showed up with tranqulizer guns when they first got the report, but when they found the cat all they had were guns.

there was a mountain lion right on the riverbank before I moved in. (from what my neighboor thinks, it was either that or a bear or something)

Hmm, I wonder if an alert person with a big knife would have a chance against on? Cuz we have them on the property, but humans are rarely bothered by them. I imagine that if the cat ambushed you, you're a gonner, but if you see it coming you'd have a better chance, but still a slim one. That cat has a good 10 pounds on me hahaha

then again <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> if you add all the steel i'd be carrying, I'd probably outweigh it

Have you hugged your camp knife today?

Dude, Cloak, us, two AK-47s, two Sage FFBMS, vs. one 150lb Cougar.

I think you get the picture. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

I hope you mean 7.62x39 AK-47's if you really think you could take down a 150lb cougar.

No, I meant the Busse. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

For an AR I'd, personally, want a G-36k with HE rounds.

Poor cougar.
We had a really big bob cat walk across the path in front of the jeep two weekends ago. Showed no fear. First bobcat my wife has seen during the day, in the wild.
It was maybe 100 feet from our house.
