one element of BC that I really like though is making stone tools; thats something I really want to get better at. Sharp, lets see if we can buy obsidian or flint around town?
If its not native whats the point though right? We have flint everywhere.

this whole idea that to be a bushcrafter and do "Bushcraft" where one only carries a little 3" knife and makes spoons and arrowheads and wearing animal furs for clothes, bla bla bla bla bla is a big fat pile of bunk.
Bushcraft is many things. It can be basic outdoors skills to some, extremism to others.
I define bushcraft as: what can i make with my AXE or my KNIFE in order to SHELTER me, FEED me, and keep me WARM, or what activity in the woods can i do for fun
Some will have you believe that that in order to "bushcraft" you need to run naked thru the woods, hooting with the owls, find a obsidian and knapp it to make your knife, then pulp cedar bark and weave thread to bind the obsidian to a stick. Thats cool and all but come on......
anything that one does in the woods is bushcraft. It is NOT a Religion or Cult or out of body experience. If you go into the woods and make a shelter thats BUSHCRAFT. If you go into the woods and build a fire, thats BUSHCRAFT. If you run naked thru the woods hooting with the owls and knapping flint, that too is BUSHCRAFT.
and this whle religion of only carrying a wee 3 or 4" blade in the woods, thats fine.....you got bushcraft hipster status. Me on the other hand, i'll keep on carrying my axe and big motherrukka choppa blade. Letme know how your log chopping is going, i'll be enjoying a fire in my log shelter long before you get thru that log with your BUSHCRAFT APPROVED 3 - 4" blade.......AHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

As to the spork, I like having a Case Hobo because it is a blade, fork and spoon. Just makes sense to me. No one needs to see me running through the woods naked, and the amount of blood from napping my own blades is not neccessary either!

I didn't like that it was harder to get clean around the pivot areas & such. Now I mostly use my Brunton Ti 3 piece silverware set, or my Snowpeak Ti Spork. I really like them both. I never have a need for the Ti knife though, I always have a better knife on me.

IMO, survival skills are more geared toward staying alive and bushcraft skills are geared more toward comfort. Of course, I guess some BC skills like trap making overlap with survival skills, but that is mainly the way I see it.

I'm new to the forum but I just got back from a day in the woods (i did actually carve a spoon) I think the term bushcraft definitely varies from person to person but I do think that the underlying thing for all of us is enjoyment in being in outdoors and possibly returning to civilization with a sense of accomplishment, be it starting a fire, building a shelter, carving a spoon or surviving off the land its the small "moral victories" that we seem to derive pleasure from. I swear that I do more or less the same thing every time i go into the woods and really ain't the most skilled but its nice to get out of the concrete jungle even if it always seems to be on a rainy saturday

In the military , bushcraft is simply a skill set. Depending on your job/mission(MOS) BC is the fine skills needed to survive at a higher state using basic rules for the field...use/bring minimal gear that is necessary for the duration of your mission. For instance...we usaully bring 3(redundant) cutting tools , depending on the AO (area of Operation)...machette , combat/survival knife, multi tool....additionally 3 source's of light..etc...remember: Mr. Murphy...anything made can fail(except Scrapeyards) ,so we learn field craft and if something fails , you still have the skills and backup tools to survive. We learn trapping, camouflage ,communication/signal , 1st aide , food prep. ,shelter....etc. All of the skills are called bushcraft or fieldcraft. We are trained in various environments , desert , mountain ,jungle ,frozen tundra....each require there own skill set. I've used it over the past 25yrs and its like riding a bike...
