I like very much the design of that blade.
And the steel is fair, and largely used by other brands.
But....
That's not the steel I'd expect from Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat.
This is what I tought before the test, and the same I think now.

This does not bother me.

I am sure you could do this to a Mutt or a Keeper all day so if you want a Scrapyard knife that can handle things like that they make them.
I prefer knives that are a bit thinner and maybe have better edge retention or stain resistance especially in a daily carry knife. Designing a knife is making compromises. If you want lateral strength and toughness you have to give up some stain resistance and a thinner sharper cross section.

I am glad the companies are starting to make more practical knives although I thought this might be an issue. The Busse Kin have got a lot of mileage out of their indestructibility. Maybe the market is not ready for a more practical Busse?

One test I would really like to see is edge retention and stain resistance.
These are supposed to be this knife's strong suit. If they have the edge retention of SR101 and the stain resistance of INFI(preferably even better),I would be willing to trade some toughness.


Kudos to HornDog for having the guts to really test these knives. We were all dyeing to know and even if it is not the answer we wanted thank you for getting it.

I have several 154 CM blades and the real users get pushed pretty far but easily short of abuse. The 154 CM blades slice like a light saber and that is what I expect. The force put on this blade is not something I would ever try on the 154 CM blades I have simply because this steel IS characteristically more brittle and not meant for such abuse. The blade geometry obviously was meant for a different purpose than brutal prying. With the Busse blades we laugh when someone says you shouldn't pry with your knife but look at the configuration of the tip of an INFI blade at the point where this HC failed. As I said, I wouldn't use my HC in this manner and I would expect it to fail if such forces were applied at that point. 154 CM, relatively brittle, you can't heat treat that out of the steel.

but I just think of it like...
if you want a knife that can slice, that knife is it, and they designed it that way.
if you want a slicer with (that steel) you have to make some compromises in toughness.

I'd rather just pay twice as much for INFI, pry it, and not worry about it. How many knives do we really need? I'd much rather have 1 I could brutalize than 2 I had to baby.

and on that note, if it won't pry, what makes it any better than a folder? A folder is so much more convenient in an EDC. It sure would be nice if Eric would let loose the testing data and pics.

I'll still try to get a BD to play with for my entertainment and maybe a MP to stash somewhere, but if I need to count on it, it will be the SS4.

Hey! bld522, where's the Love man? Don't be jumpin' down Busse's throat because they made a knife for a different purpose than pokin' through car doors and choppin' up road signs. Their trend, lately, to thinner stock blades is geared towards folks who need a slicer and not a prybar. When you use the knife for it's intended purpose it is an exceptional blade but it might not qualify as a survival knife. The standard thickness is 0.173" and the thickness on the G-10 models is 0.137". I'm lovin' it but that doesn't mean my 0.220" Game Warden is going in the back of the drawer it's just a different style knife for a different purpose. I'm not trying to get up in your face I just have stong feelings about the subject.
