I know Ontario had a deal in the mix with Becker to bring back his line that went belly up with the death of Cammilus Knife Company but the fact that Ontario has now scrapped that offer to Becker and has instead bought and own Justin Gingrich of Ranger Knife Company.
I know a lot of dogs own Justin's knives and swear by them, so how do you all feel about buying his knife "designs" made somewhere by Ontario Knife?
The death of Ranger Knives and the re-birth in the Ontario family of knives kind of makes my tummy feel bad.
There was a Custom effect before when you ordered a Ranger Knife now Ontario will own all his designs and sell them with a mass quantity and saturation selling frenzy as soon as tooling is in place almost surely.
Could you imagine if Ontario made a offer to buy Busse or one of its Kin?
I never thought much of Ontario's steel and quality control. Who knows what the future is for knives.
Blade just reported that a Texas court upheld a decision that a Assisted Opener IS a SWITCHBLADE and therefore ILLEGAL!!
What's next?
Peace.
Some people just never learn.

Time will tell, but this will make Rangers readily available. It will also free up Justin to design more models and make more customs. I hope they keep the 5160 steel and that Justin keeps the quality high. Ontario needed a line to replace the RAT line so I think it was quite a score. With Ka-Bar doing the Beckers, Ontario needed a comparable line. As far as quality with Ontario, it has been a bit spotty. I have quite a few of them that have served me well, especially the SP-5 Survival Bowie. It took the Dog Father LE to replace that one as my favorite Bowie. I want to see American Cutlery companies survive and thrive. This might actually improve Ontario.

I found out about the Ranger deal while I was at Blade. I'm really sure what to think of it. I got cornered while looking at the Range blades at the Ontario booth and the guy I talked to said they would be using the same steel Justin used and my understanding is that they want to keep the product to the same standards.
So time will tell...

hmm, yeah, i was quite worried about this to at the time. As far as quality with Ontario, it has been a bit spotty You're quite right HD, but all the some, quality issues with the ranger production knives have been pretty frequent too. My semi-custom RD7 shipped with almost no edge on it, and I still haven't been able to make the tip sharp. In general, i wouldn't rate the RD series' (as bought from deals like brigade quatermasters) quality as being higher than that of Ontario's knives. In fact, I would say that my Ontario RTAK-II was higher quality than my ranger. To a certain extent, turning these knives into production blades may assure higher quality, but it will also flood the market and rob the brand of much of its cache Bottom line: buy from scrap yard Could you imagine if Ontario made a offer to buy Busse or one of its Kin? don't even joke, thats basically my nightmare scenario. Let us all pray that never happens. I don't think Dan, Eric, or Jerry would do that for any amount of money though

If you ever saw the feeding frenzy at the Busse Knife Group at Blade, you wouldn't worry. They sell every knife they make. There is room in the market for the big guys and the smaller companies.

I agree, bld. I think the rangers excel at all knife-related tasks. I find that my RD7 will split wood faster and easier when batoning that any other knife I own, and it chops and cuts well. The tip prying in the test was also quite impressive (I had been worried about the tip, but not any more )
I'm not planning to sell though: its a hard user for me!

I was in the market for a Ranger Knive, but now I'm not, sorry. Well at least not the newer one's coming out with Ontario.

Well, this news has been up over on Justin's forum for a few days now, so anyone who might wonder about how this will change Ranger knives should check out the forum. I'm just glad that I was able to get a "custom" Afghan knife from Justin. I am now jealous that of all people, my sister has an RD9 and an RD4 (both gifts from my brother and I for two Christmases). On the up note, Justin will have time to do more customs, which I like because that is what makes buying knives from Justin so great! He can do whatever you want and do it at a relatively affordable price. I'm just hoping that Ontario keeps the quality of Ranger knives high and doesn't jack up the price.
