I actually tried something like this on my DMLE using mustard (French's Yellow). I applied the mustard to the de-greased blade, let it sit about an hour and repeted five times. The result was a nice mottled appearance. I was so happy with the results I plan to do a few others. I'll try and post pics tonight if time allows.

I thought I'd make this thread a little more Scrap Yard related. Took my beat up, wierded out, convexed Dumpster Mutt and gave it the "treatment".

Horn Dog:

Are you sure you understand this pickling business? If you’re pickling green beans, you snap each one to be sure it’s fresh before adding it to the pickling liquor. The beans that bend instead of snap are thrown away. These knives of yours all seem to be in one piece. ??????

I don't pickle green beans, just whole cucumbers. Besides, the only boken knife I have is stainless, so it would not take a patina.

I got it. You're making relish knives!

Before I threw out the vinegar, I gave my DFCG a patina, too.

i like the looks of it.

i prefer a "pattern" in mine though & normally use mustard or even sliced tomatos..if i am slicing one to eat ill just leave the knife in there while im eating...tabasco works too!

How to do it with mustard btw?
Just putting it on the blade I guess?
I've just finished a first try vinegar patina on my Ratmandu.Just the last five minutes of the vinegar run I experimented a bit with mustard, put something on the blade and put back into the vinegar bath for 5 more minutes.Came out as slightly yellowish areas afterwards.

Get a squirt bottle of mustard and dribble the stuff onto the blade randomly. Leave the knife sit, clean, repeat as necessary. The point is to produce an uneven and “natural” looking pattern of patina. I’m not sure how natural the result is, but that’s the theory.
