Ok, I did a little more testing. At the end the results were a little untypical of a Scrap Yard Knife.

So first up was just my usual try-to-destroy-tip-prying wood test.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

No problem. The YKLE took it like the FBM. It would get jammed in the wood and just roll out.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

I couldn't get a large aperture from digging with the YKLE

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

Not a phenomenal digger of wood, like the RMD, but man is the tip a beast!!

Thus I went to a second board.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

This time it was little bit better. The wood actually cooperated with me.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

A slightly larger opening was dugged.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

Tip is just as good as day 1.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

Next, I really wanted to see how this chopped.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

Got through the wood and UH OH....

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

I don't understand what happened. The wood was actually pretty dense fat wood but I did not expecting the YKLE to completely dent on me like that. The chops until the fat wood was fine. Then first hit on the supersaturated wood and the LE dented. My FBM took all the damage when Cloak and I harvested a good deal of fatwood out in the Gorge.

[Linked Image from i235.photobucket.com]

One side looks like something did happened, but not so sure.

[img]http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee292/The_Aaij_1/DSC_0105-4.jpg[/img]

But upon closer inspection...

[img]http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee292/The_Aaij_1/DSC_0106-5.jpg[/img]

I've definitely got a decent dent from just chopping wood.

I went back home and cleaned the knife up and examined it even closer.

Yep, I've definitely got a decent dent.

[img]http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee292/The_Aaij_1/DSC_0108-2.jpg[/img]

(you gotta remember this ain't no DF and that isn't a sissy dent)

I really feel pretty darn bad that this happened. Wasn't expecting at all. The YKLE chopped amazingly, less than 50 chops and it was through the board! For only a 9 inch knife that's pretty darn impressive. I really still like this knife, but seeing the edge dent up from chopping a little wood worries me.

I know that even if I do sharpen it out, it will happen again. I'm a little saddened by this but I know the Yard will pull through for me.

Glad to see you put your knive thru some more tests. Yup, there is a dent there. Not sure what to say, but it will come out, but like you said it will probably happen again. See what Dan has to say.

Well, actually, before I even go to Dan, I'm gonna test it again tomorrow.

Same wood, same part of the edge and the edge closer to the choil and see what happens.

I did get most of it out actually, pretty soft steel (ahahahha, right... SR-77 is awesome stuff though) and easy to sharpen. But I know that Cloak and I are gonna harvest some more fatwood and this knife will be coming with me.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this knife. It's a really great to use. Excellent chopper for such a small knife. Thick and brute-like but very fun to use.

I'm surprised to see the steel dent like that. SR-77 is suppose to be tough stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing how your next test goes.

Just sharpen that little roll out. SR77 is not as hard as some steels, but it is very tough. Sometimes, when chopping very hard material, like fatwood, the edge will roll a bit but not chip out or break. I don't see any failure there, Sharp.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

Hmmmm you're a brute Sharp . Look forward to seeing the outcome.

this is an oversimplification, but tough essentially means soft, which means dents. i dented the edge on my battle mistress pretty bad the first time i used it. better than the chips that come from hard edges (S30V, 154CM, D2). ideal steels are high hardness with medium carbon, meaning you get the hardness of crystalline structures, without the fracturing risk of large carbides.

Sharp, steel it on a chrome wrench then strop it. sharpen if there's any damage left.

Ok, So I did actually get most of that dent out. Used a coarse cermaic rod, followed by a finder rod, followed by some 600 grit sandpaper, followed by a leather strop.

Now I'm gonna go test it, again. I'm taking the RMD along for a little comparison.

My DM took a small dent like that once when I battoned her through a knot in some wood, no biggie though, a little work on a steel and it was as good as new.
The SR77 does seem to dent easier than the steel on my MOD4 survival knife though as the only time I managed to dent that was when I was battoning through a nail that I didn't know was in the wood !!!!

I believe someone else on here is getting a MOD4 soon so maybe he can also compare it with some Yard blades !!!

Hey Sharp,

Glad it turned out ok for ya. Let us know what happens. What is a RMD?
