No Prob. I should probably make the camera take smaller size pictures so it's easier to load and send.

Loved the test especially the bar graph ,nice touch.

I think the SOG is definitly designed to be a fighter first. The penatration is great and that sharpened back edge is great for snap cuts. It is also a modern copy of a classic. It would have bee nice to have the weights and prices of the knives listed as well. It would add a lot of relevant info without adding any more testing and would also give you more parameters to base some of your conclusions on.

I bet the SAR5 would have done very well at that test.

I am impressed with how well the Gerber did. I did not like the original at all but this new one with the simpler handle seems much improved. A comparison to the weight of the first LMF would be a nice extra.

I hope you don't use a lesser setting on your camera because one thing I liked was the good photos other than you did not get all the knives in the group photos.

I hope I am not being to critical? I thought you guys did a great review.

Thanks, we were hoping you guys would enjoy this length test. We promised that we would complete something like this some time ago.

Thanks for the advice Unsub. I don't mind some helpful hints and tips.

For the weights, this is one thing that we didn't really consider. I guess, while it might affect our conclusion, in any survival/bushcraft/hiking situation your usually gonna have one knife. With that in mind, weight should be to large of a factor.... that and we don't have a scale to measure oz.

The Gerber, mind you, was designed with comfort in mind (whoops to many "minds"). They advertise the knife handles to not give blisters. That's not the case with prolong use. After I chopped with it for awhile, I got a pretty bad water blister near the joint of index finger. It hurt like crazy for several weeks. Used my SOCOM to make an aperture and squeeze all that gooey liquid out. *Shudders*

As with the Camera, we're using a Nikon D80 so, photos will be kept crisp and clean as possible. On the group shots. I think I did get all the knives in. Unless your talking about the drill test, which in that case the Nimravus was left out and not tested.

As I said before, some hints and tip is always a good thing for me.

Your right sharp, it was only the drill test that did not have the Nimravus.
Weight however is a huge factor. The less a knife weighs the more likely it will be with you when you need it. Weight is a deciding factor in what knife I carry and how I carry it. This is especially true when I go into the bush.
The SAR5 would be perfect other than the weight.

I will weigh all the knives I own that are stock on a good scale I have and I am sure it won't be hard to find the rest.

Muppy =139 grams

Hairycarry =179 grams

SAR5 =259 grams

YKCG =128.75 grams

DFLE =436.3 Grams

Swarden =41.2 grams

SS4 =111 grams (my SS4 has a thinner edge and no coating. A stock SS4 could be a gram or 2 heavier.

Buck 119 =173.1 with stock leather sheath= 247 grams

Chris reeve Inyoni with stock sheath 75 grams without 41.5 grams

SH-E =511 grams

thanks for the feedback unsub, this is our first large test, and we hope that more will follow. Perhaps a more detailed comparison of some of the better knives?

Just to be clear-- the back edge of the sog isn't sharpened. There is a swedge, but its a false edge. The seal pup elites have blunt serrations across the back, ostensibly for notching (but I personally believe they're just trying to seem tacti-cool)

I think you guys are raising the bar for reviews. This was an excellent comparison. Great job!

Nice review, very thorough! I take it that the handles of the Dumpster and YKLE are about the same size then, and just a little too small? Off topic, but I'm still wondering about the howler sized handles, since this seems to be the one complaint most folks have with those knives. I wonder if my super small hands will take to them or not, the Busse BATAC and Ranger RD series are a little too big for me, but Active Duty and Meaner were to thin. Game warden was perfect, but the blade was too small. Maybe this will be the "Grail"?

The small Busse basic and the newer small Scrap yard handles are a bit small for my hand, but they are still quite usable. For me the Holy Grail of those medium sized knives is the Ratmandu. I have the Seal Pup and Pup Elite. The plain edge elite is a great little knife if you're looking for something really light. The YKs and DMs are light and super tough. Another knife I really like in that 4" to 5" size is the Ritter Mk 3 in S30V.

HD,

Thanks for the comment. Once we can some funding of our own we'll see if we can get a good amount of larger knives to tests. Course, I'm thinking we could get some more legit graphs, as well.

I was thinking of showing the overall comparison graph in comfort and then do single task comfort. Might have to try that on the next test.

Also, one thing to note is we did not rate the use test portion of the test. This is because the results are there for everyone to see. That, and it's much harder to say which one performed better. Each knife has it's strength and weakness, but I will admit the RMD was the most consistent, which is why we still say it is our first choice.

Samhain73,

The HRLM handles are awesome and I would recommend those over the Res-C. Many have found those handles to be the "Goldilocks" of knife handles. They will be the exact same size as the RMD.

I have small hands so i don't mind the smaller RES C handles. If you do have larger hands the mutts would be a better choice than the Y's because the choil makes for a better grip.

I much prefer the large RES C handles to the larger Mischief handles. I had an M6 and really did not like the handle AT ALL. It was way to heavy and had an awful feel to it. The Hookguard was so much better. The RES.C is also substantially lighter. If you see my previous post with the weights compare the SH-E to my DFLE?
Even though the DFLE has 2 more inches of blade it is substantially lighter.
The straight handle was even heavier although I am not sure about the fusion.
