I also tested out a few knives and a couple saws, nothing detailed just some whittling.
the contestants:
a Mora classic, DM, Strider WP tanto, SAK Jumpmaster, TOPS survival saw, SAK Pioneer electrician, Busse GW.
My semi pathetic attempt at a fuzz stick, the mora handled this really well, as did the DM(thinned convexed edge) and the GW
I tried this with the strider...not a good idea. The geometry is just too obtuse, it would either skip off or just dig in. So it's gonna stay on the Tac rig.
Did a quick stake with the DM, it handled this really well, the choil was really handy here, I was able to choke up and get a good positive, controled grip and make very delibrate cuts.
loves
next up was the GW, also handled this chore well. Cut cleanly with the factory edge. Very controlable without gloves on, somewhat unstable with Petzl belay gloves on.
I just got this one back from David E with the sheath...wow! he makes a rediculously nice sheath. And this is definately a new favorite.
No prob.
again, easily controled, blade fits my large hands well, even in gloves, and it cuts clean and deep.

the TOPS survival saw cut through this dry oak branch in 38 seconds, and got stuck once
the SAK did it in 29 and did not get stuck
the SAK pioneer was able to cut this branch, trim it down to bare wood, and cut the notch. However it was a bit difficult to do. The knife doesn't have alot of heft to back up it's sharp blade. I'll limit this guy to small chores
fatwood shavings
and thats all I had time fore today, had to deal with an old hag who thinks she owns the wilderness.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />
