Let me start by saying that I have never seen 154CM perform as well as it does in the Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat line.

We pounded it through concrete blocks, steel pipe, wood, etc. . . I pried, bent, hammered and basically abused the tar out of these little blades.

The first issue that needs to be addressed is “What happened to Vic's knife?” Looking at the returned blade and further testing of that same blade led us to the conclusion that his Hairy Carry did very well before it broke at approx. 1/4” from the tip. In the pic below, you can see the permanent set that the knife took BEFORE breaking. Comparative testing of this same model shows that Vic's knife was flexed in excess of 20-25 degrees before breaking!

Two things contributed to this problem. First, with only 1/4” of the very thin point stuck in the oak, Vic could not know how far the tip was flexing as it will flex very easily at this point. Second, had he pounded the tip in deeper, this failure would not have occurred as he would have had to apply a much greater and noticeable amount of force to the blade. Note the pic below! The toughness of this steel with this heat-treat and cryogenic treatment is remarkable! When locked in a vise 1” from the tip, the Hairy Carry flexes over 35 degrees before breaking!!! You will be hard pressed to find any other blade made out of this same material with a similar geometry that can sustain this level of flexibility. We have never encountered one to this date and we test a lot of other knives!

Why not reinforce the tip? We could do this with a thicker geometry or tanto design, but then the intended purpose of this knife would be greatly compromised. The 154CM series is designed for slicing. That is all. If we intended the designs to stand up to lateral prying, we would have employed a different geometry to the tip. If you want a heavier, more reinforced tip, that can stand up to more lateral prying, we can apply one at an additional cost but then you are going to sacrifice the advantages of a finer tip.

The only thing I ask of our customers is to be treated fairly. I ask that we be given a first look at any damaged knives that the Yard puts out in order to assess what may have gone wrong BEFORE you post pics and cause numerous orders to be canceled. We don't have anything to hide, and we would appreciate the opportunity to not be “blind-sided” by an unexpected occurrence where every self-proclaimed expert can spout off about how our equipment is defective and sub-standard without having any real facts to back up their claims. We will always do our best to treat our customers with fairness and honor and we ask the same in return. And let's please stop the grade school level heckling about how folks have to be overly cautious with their 154CM Scrap Yard blades. We are all above that.

Either way, at the end of the day, your knives are covered by our warranty. Feel free to use them in any way that you think is fair and we'll be there to back you up if anything goes wrong!

Dan

thanks for the pics Dan.

I do hear what your saying about the tip being thin too.
thats what I thought.
that thin, and just about anything can snap.

I regret very much if my posted pictures caused cancelled orders.

i doubt that. the orders that would have been cancelled were DCDM's since people never ordered the MPLE from anywhere. unless i missed the boat and they did hit the store.

it was the wait, not you.

Dan

Guys, that right there is a pretty strong statement, and it makes me smile with pride that I own Busse kin knives! It also makes me want to buy more.

Y'all know what they say, "It ain't braggin' if you back it up!"

Good test.
Was worth the wait.

Can't wait for some more 154cm.

Thanks Dan!
