Well said S/F!

Momaw - Howdy and Welcome to the ScrapYard! I understand your frustration, as many of us felt the same way at one time or another. However, I can tell you this - the Busses are great folks! If you ever have the chance to meet them at a Blade show you will find that out for yourself. Secondly, theirs are small companies, yet they are thriving while much bigger companies are moving to China or going out of business. I am happy and proud that my knives are being made in the U.S., and by a company composed of great people.
Busse Combat, Swamprat, or ScrapYard - great knives made by great folks!

Again, Welcome to the ScrapYard! Tom

Welcome Momaw, I was kinda in the same boat as you. I could not find any Busse that I could afford, the Swamp Rat HC (I think) was not looking good to me for the price, found the Scrap Yard and want a couple from them, but those were not available, so I was not sure what to do at that point, I was mad/frustrated at the prices at the BFE, but bought a knife (Yard Keeper) for not too much over the orginal price. Since then I've bought a few Bussekin blades. You could call it a cult, lol I'm sure if you hold on to your knive, it will appreciate in value in a short time, if you go that route. Like HD said, things will be happening here at the Yard soon. Yesterday was my second Ganza (I screwed up on the first one), but I'm feeling really good about yesterdays. I'm trying for a Custom Swamp Rat HC. Stick around, and buy some more Bussekin blades. The DogFather is a very nice huge blade, you will love it.

Well, it's nice to know that there's some people with similar thoughts and experiences. That I didn't just violate the Code of the Brethren as it were and earn a shunning for all time.

It sounds like the Busse family has never really explained their methodology even to you veteran members. I didn't want to bring up the word 'cult' though it crossed my mind, because for some it has some very nasty implications. But since you brought it up, it is cultish. You have a personal leadership rather than a corporate entity; you have your own language to a degree, with cryptic acronyms; you have iconic worship, of warthogs, rats and canines; you have a mythos of excellence; and you have a community which is relatively difficult for the outsider to penetrate.

I'm not saying cults are always bad thing, or even that it feels particularly strongly like one. I'm just saying the qualities are there, set to a low but recognizable volume.

I wonder if we could persuade the Busses, or in this particular case Mr. Dan Busse, to sit down and explain their strategy. Has there been any attempt to ask directly? Direct questions often succeed where hints fail. I see in another topic that he just got back from an excursion and had some thoughts on the matter. Strike while the iron is hot?

I write as if he's not around. He could be reading the thread five minutes from now. :P

And yes, the dogfather from what I found sounds like it's at the highest levels of hack-n-chop knives. I've never owned one before, but they look useful, sort of a long-edged hatchet. And just plain cool. It will be fun playing with it to see what I can apply it it to. Playing cautiously of course, since it's a seriously big dog and could cause injury in its enthusiasm.

I can believe it the DFLE is the ultimate so after you have one the DFCG is not so great. If I had a DFCG I would get Ban to do a really nice convex bevel though and make it even better than the DFLE. My SAR5 has a convex bevel and it would be even cooler on a big chopper like the DFCG. Also you would not feel as bad about using a modded DFCG as a rather rare DFLE.
You could have something even sharper than a DFLE and as tough as a DFCG.

what???
the only cults around here are the melon head ones!

althought the Busse's do things different I think it's just the way they do bussiness ... and it works. I would think that's why they do it.
I agree it is different though.
I wouldn't say it's really hard for the "outside" community to penetrate really... you just wait for the releases.
Thats how alot of makers do it... only their releases last way longer thats all.

EDIT: I completley missed your first post, sorry... some of this doesn't really make much sense now.

Learning the "language" of the abreviations of the various models is the initiation phase......then there is the general knowledge required to enable you to know knife design/historic importance and sharpening/modifying techniques...then computer skills to share the knowledge....and finally the grant/funds to feed the addiction...it is really something you should get a diploma for....something like "Batchelor of Busse-Kin" to put after your name...
"BBK" .....sounds quite good actually...lol
