I would say the Busse phenomena is less of a cult (I'm not compelled to believe in anything particular) and more like Harley Davidson marketing. You're part of the "club" when you buy one. Sometimes you have to buy at above retail. People respect the company history and accomplishments. There are the cryptic names (FLXYZZY anyone?). There's the slavish attentiveness and speculation around new product releases. There's respect for the old products. Instead of Sturgis we have Blade. It's all similiar except you can't buy the knives retail.

So welcome to the cu..club Bidon!

Yes, I think that is more accurate than my good cult characterization. I feel so liberated to know that I am no longer in the Harley or Busse cults.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

This discussion of the secondary knife market gives a whole new meaning to the word scalper.

It certainly does....on the exchange now there are surfacing some of the knives from the recent Ganza with the usual stories of ...."my mate got me one I was really trying for and I can't have both.....so one has to go and I am selling this one for xxxxxx".....and xxxxx roughly translates to a "very healthy profit" or as Implume says which I quite like and this should become Busse folklore if used enough.....the knife straight away becomes a "scalper"!

Agreed...they don't create or trade off true misery....it's not like Busse make bandages and some "scalper" is buying all of them up and selling them in the Sandpit for gross profit....because as you say "the market supports it".....it's not that bad....there are always other knives and no soldier or derserving user who is on a modest income will be deprived of a knife entirely...it's just a shame the guys out there pedalling for profit don't go to the Sandpit and see how welcome their 20 knives bought in bulk might be received by people out there if they were available at Store prices those guys could afford and more importantly because of that guy's journey ...these people now had access to them...maybe then they would have a different view?

Ultimately.....if the "only" customers being screwed by "high prices and scarcity" were other collectors....I would'nt have a view on this issue at all.

I guess the question is, what's the difference between a "scalper" and a successful business person? Is there something wrong with buying a product and reselling it at a "very healthy profit" if the market supports that? I thought that's what capitalism is all about?

To me, the word "scalper" has an extremely negative connotation. I reserve it for those who profit at the expense of human misery. It's hard for me to apply that definition to people who make money reselling Busse family knives.

Let’s not get too overheated. I made that entry because I’m a sucker for a pun.

Is a scalper selling tickets to a rock concert trading in human misery, or human desire for entertainment?

I hear you, Steel Fan. A couple of things to keep in mind.

1) Entire wars in vastly harsher conditions than those presented in the Sandbox were successfully fought using Ka-Bars. What a soldier might like to have and what will work are not necessarily the same thing.

2) Military customers are Jerry's primary customers. While Jerry doesn't post a "knife for a soldier" offer on his website, I doubt anyone in the active military would be refused a Busse knife if they contact Busse Combat directly. And, of course, ASH-1's are still available at factory pricing on the Busse web site. I can't imagine a much better combat knife than an ASH-1.
Just a note per Jerry on Blade forum. ASHIs are history tonight or tommorrow with the exception of some skinnys at the company store. If you want a thick one or an LE brand new from Busse you better hurry.
