If the WD-40 isn't working try something a little more ambitious like PB Blaster. Spray a little on then tap the parts quickly and lightly. It seems to help the penetrating oil ... well, penetrate. I'll second the mineral oil and scotchbright pads for getting surface rust off too. Start with a brass wire brush and steel wool if it's really stubborn.

This must have been an exciting package to see over at the customs office.

So, there's a small look at some of the knives in my collection. What do you think?

The spikes are badass!

The spikes are for working big stuck knots loose. You often see them on Brit and canadian militay folders from the last part of the 19th and first part of the 20th century.

A good quality penetrating oil like "Move it" will work better than WD 40 which really is not good for much other than cleaning things and sucking out water.

What you do is squirt a bunch of oil into the pivot ,wrap it in a paper towel and work it back and forth. The oil should come out on to the towel bringing a bit of gunk with it. Keep doing that until it won't get any more gunk out. Soak it and repeat.

Actually this works well with any gunked up folder.

You should also get a plastic or even a brass brush to clean with. The brass is good because it is abrasive but not hard enough to hurt the steel. Get right in there. Fill the whole [censored] thing up with oil and try to get the bristles moving around in all the crevices.

You may have to take it apart but that should be a last resort after you have tried everything else. If you do have to take it apart you should find someone who really knows old folders. The Bernard Levine page at BF might be able to help.

Rainwalker, I hope you're not too busy, because I'll have to get some pants for that DFLE finally, and after seeing some of your newer work with leather, I'm getting a good idea of what I want. I'll be PMing you soon. As you can guess from the above pics, I'm a real leather fan for my blades.

I'm busy but I'll be glad to help if I can. I've made tons...well maybe not tons...I've done a bunchs of DF leather.

I really like those Muela's, Mine are all Spanish made, I thought all Muela's were Spanish. I've got a Muela Spanish military survial outfit that I picked up from the Muela guys way back when the Blade show used to be in Knoxville, Tennessee. I've always wished I could find another set but I guess they don't sell them any more, or at least not to the public. Did Boker buy Muela?

They're still all made in Spain, they just ship to other countries like Canada through import companies like RUKO, for example. If you look closely at all the blades they all say Made in Spain. Here, I did a zoom in on one of the pics of the bone handled Rebeco. They are one of my fave companies to buy knives from, which of course includes SYK and the rest of the Busse family blades.

It's a little fuzzy in the pic, but every one of their quality blades has this etched on the side of the blade, along with the company logo, the stag with the double M between the antlers.

As for Boker owning them, I had thought they had owned them for some time now.

Cool about the sheath, I'll try to finish getting my ideas straight in my head and on paper, and PM you soon.

Made in Spain , now I feel dumb? I was sure they were from South America?

That stag handled Rebco is very nice. What do you think of the sheaths and the fit and finish?

That's a nice bunch of blades, tyger. Your collection is as wide ranging as mine. It is good to handle and use knives from different makers. Each brand seems to have its own spirit for lack of a better word. I can usually tell a Muela instantly. They just have that Spanish look. Since you have so many knives, I know you can appreciate the perfection of the DFLE. It comes alive in the hand the way a good Bowie should.

Horned, dangerous, and off my medication.

It's called a Marlin Spike.
