I noticed this in my DFLE after I used it to trim some hedges today. The small dent on the right side was from me hitting a nail a few weeks ago but the big one is new and I didnt hit anything other than branches. On close inspection it looks like the metal broke away. I already have been sharpening it for an hour and its down from 3/16 " to 1/8" now. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Sorry for the crappy picture, it was the best i could get of the damage.

hmmm.... looks weird.
it's like perfectly squared isn't it?
I know they can get dings and rolls (and they can chip slightly on bone or rock) but... a chip from just vines seems weird.

I would just sharpen it out a little (not all the way) and not worry about it.

maybe someone else will pitch in with some more in put. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Ouch, that doesn't look good, it's definitely a chip. Not sure why it happened, but contact SY and they'll take care of it.

My DMCG experienced the same thing, but a lot smaller (like your tiny chip). I was doing some yard work in the back yard and hit steel or rock. It's so small it'd eventually sharpen out, but it's definitely a chip, not a roll.

i had a similar thing with my DFLE and my swamprat crash axe which is made of the same steel.someone on another forum had a similar problem also a while back.

their was a bad batch of steel that had air bubbles in it and if the air bubble was near the edge this was the result.

but send it in to the shop and let them determine if it is an air bubble or not and what the right recourse is.i dont know that it is an air bubble issue.

if you hit something hard like a rock or steel a ding or chip is expected but when its just wood, weather hard or soft their may be an underlying issue.

the good news is scrapyard wont leave you high and dry.i'd quit sharpening it now so dan can get a better look at it and have a better feel for how serious it is.

just from looking at it in a pic none of us can really say what it is.it does look strange though.

e-mail patty and then take it from their.

Is there any chance whatsoever that the hedges might have been at one time shaped using wire? Though the angularity of the chip is strange...

If you can find any sort of magnification use it they really help.

If it is a chip I would check if any of the bad steel was used for DFLE's?

If it is the bad steel you need to get it replaced. It will take a while but they will make it right and you don't want to need it and have it fail. I don't recall anything but DFCG's being affected though.

Good luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crossfingers.gif" alt="" />

sorry to hear about this... that would really bother me if it happened to me on my Scrapper 6 but as others have stated, the good news is that SY doesnt mess around with CS... They WILL take care of you and you will have a new DFLE.

As much as I love my SY's. I did have this happen while boning-out/popping joints on a deer. My YKLE took some punishment.

In all honestly, I do think that one gets what one pays for. I mean, I cannot see this happening with a Busse. Look, I'm not bagging Scrap Yards, I truly love-em. But, like I said. There is a reason why Busse are just that much more $$$. You get what you pay for! And for the money$$$, I don't think one can beat a SY, for what one gets.

Just my thoughts after some testing <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Best thing to due is to contact Patti. I had the same thing happen with my Crash Axe and DF. I was told to stop using them and to have them sent in. The replacements have had no problems through some serious beatings.

Gotta love the warranty!!!!

All my users get a small ding or two eventually. I usually don't worry about them unless their too big to sharpen out after a time or two on the sharpener...
