I noticed this in my DFLE after I used it to trim some hedges today. The small dent on the right side was from me hitting a nail a few weeks ago but the big one is new and I didnt hit anything other than branches. On close inspection it looks like the metal broke away. I already have been sharpening it for an hour and its down from 3/16 " to 1/8" now. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Sorry for the crappy picture, it was the best i could get of the damage.

hmmm.... looks weird.
it's like perfectly squared isn't it?
I know they can get dings and rolls (and they can chip slightly on bone or rock) but... a chip from just vines seems weird.

I would just sharpen it out a little (not all the way) and not worry about it.

maybe someone else will pitch in with some more in put.

Ouch, that doesn't look good, it's definitely a chip. Not sure why it happened, but contact SY and they'll take care of it.

My DMCG experienced the same thing, but a lot smaller (like your tiny chip). I was doing some yard work in the back yard and hit steel or rock. It's so small it'd eventually sharpen out, but it's definitely a chip, not a roll.

i had a similar thing with my DFLE and my swamprat crash axe which is made of the same steel.someone on another forum had a similar problem also a while back.

their was a bad batch of steel that had air bubbles in it and if the air bubble was near the edge this was the result.

but send it in to the shop and let them determine if it is an air bubble or not and what the right recourse is.i dont know that it is an air bubble issue.

if you hit something hard like a rock or steel a ding or chip is expected but when its just wood, weather hard or soft their may be an underlying issue.

the good news is scrapyard wont leave you high and dry.i'd quit sharpening it now so dan can get a better look at it and have a better feel for how serious it is.

just from looking at it in a pic none of us can really say what it is.it does look strange though.

e-mail patty and then take it from their.

Is there any chance whatsoever that the hedges might have been at one time shaped using wire? Though the angularity of the chip is strange...

If you can find any sort of magnification use it they really help.

If it is a chip I would check if any of the bad steel was used for DFLE's?

If it is the bad steel you need to get it replaced. It will take a while but they will make it right and you don't want to need it and have it fail. I don't recall anything but DFCG's being affected though.

Good luck

sorry to hear about this... that would really bother me if it happened to me on my Scrapper 6 but as others have stated, the good news is that SY doesnt mess around with CS... They WILL take care of you and you will have a new DFLE.

As much as I love my SY's. I did have this happen while boning-out/popping joints on a deer. My YKLE took some punishment.

In all honestly, I do think that one gets what one pays for. I mean, I cannot see this happening with a Busse. Look, I'm not bagging Scrap Yards, I truly love-em. But, like I said. There is a reason why Busse are just that much more $$$. You get what you pay for! And for the money$$$, I don't think one can beat a SY, for what one gets.

Just my thoughts after some testing

Best thing to due is to contact Patti. I had the same thing happen with my Crash Axe and DF. I was told to stop using them and to have them sent in. The replacements have had no problems through some serious beatings.

Gotta love the warranty!!!!

All my users get a small ding or two eventually. I usually don't worry about them unless their too big to sharpen out after a time or two on the sharpener...

I personally would NOT send that in.
but thats just me.
it's a small dent or chip (who really cares what it is?) so I would just sharpen it out and use it hard! you might have hit something metal (seeing what a tiny dent that nail left makes me think you probably hit something HARD) and if you get any huge blowouts then send it back.

thats Just me though.

Users get little chips and such. I don't care who makes them. I'd just use it and drive on like a Ranger.

Keep in mind if you used something like a belt sander to sharpen you can wreck the temper in the edge and make it more prone to problems. This goes for any blade. The second thing, I remember some Busse blades use to have issues with micro chipping until you sharpened away the factory edge, then you ended up with the peak performance.

Not sure about your case, however I will echo other sentiments here, steel it & touch it up but don't sharpen it right out. Keep enjoying beating on it and you will eventually sharpen them out through your regular touch ups.

I've still got a couple marks in my DF edge that I should post up here. I was chopping up a computer case and hit a couple of spot welds. Needless to say, the spot welds won, however the DF held up like you would expect it to!

How hot would the blade need to get to damage the temper if it is heat treated to Rockwell 58?

you can actually do slow damage to a temper as well.
BTW. Like through dishwashing.
so I wonder if you were to heat it up alot on a belt sander whenever you sharpen, even though you don't get it hot enough to actually change the temper over time I wonder if it can happen?
I would think that would be a bigger problem with a bench grinder though.

I agree with coldone.
I never sharpen anything all the way out, it's just a waste of time and metal since it will eventually sharpen out anyways.

Now here's a man (or woman or child or indeterminate) looking at the glass half full. Personally I have always wondered why knives don't come with serrations out on the tip where you can get a quick slash with them. Instead the serrations always end up down at the base of the blade where you want it straight for fine cutting and carving... Maybe it wouldn't work great, but I don't think I've ever seen anybody even try.

I did a little testing of my own at work today and it definatly looks like a chip under the mircoscope. The good news is I had the blade mag particle tested and UV dye tested, it appears there are no flaws in the blade. I also beat the living hell out of the blade cutting up an oak pallet and it passed with flying colors. I have no plans to send it back to the yard, its a user and I fully expected it to get some dings and dents.
