I figure that most people who are not "into" knives should probably have 3 decent production knives.
A nice EDC Folder
A do it all 4 and 1/2 to 5 inch blade fixed outdoors knife
And a good kitchen knife like the Spyderco Yang or a decent Henkels.
Most people don't even have that much.
Could you live with just 3 decent knives?
Maybe you could even live with just one single blade to do everything?
There is no reason I could not use my SS4 for everything from cooking to EDC even though it would not be perfect.
Other than I would go completely mad. I have knives for cutting cardboard and paper ,a different couple of knives for wood ,some for EDC with light clothes ,some for heavy clothes ,some for EDC in a suit or with nice clothes etc. Throwers and daggers and antiques. Actually come to think of it I have more than 3 sharpening systems.

The really difficult part would be deciding which three!

Like Simon...... :
"Live" ... probably.
Enjoy... NO WAY.
Most terms are relative terms. "Live" could be stretched to be relative.
To complicated to go into detail.... so I won't vote.

I only have three knives at this point. I'm a minority around here, I guess. ![[Linked Image from chapterhouse2.nhvt.net]](http://chapterhouse2.nhvt.net/users/momaw/dogfather3.jpg)

It's a start. Yeah... I would guess that makes you a minority. You have some shopping to do. .

yes i could live with three but not those three.
i would want something with a 3in blade.either folder or small fixed.
i would want a decent sized fixed with a 5in blade
and instead of a kitchen knife i would NEED a chopper.
now are we talking everyday life here or are we talking survival??
my answer would still be the same.
i figure i could use all 3 of these knives for kitchen duty but i couldnt use a kitchen knife for chopping duty.i like to chop.

I agree with nortern1, instead of a kitchen knife, I would much rather have a chopper.
I could do with just 3 knives, but I wouldn't want to.

Yeah, these three were chosen to complement eachother. I don't foresee buying any more because these do everything I might need to do with a knife. Though I wouldn't mind doing a lot more shopping if I had somebody else on hand to take care of the bill...

What got me on this was the realization that I could probably trade my knife collection for enough bike parts for a pretty good chopper project.
A couple reasons I picked a good kitchen knife instead of a chopper is I have a cheap but effective Norsehawk. Also a good kitchen knife like a double Henkels french chefs knife also makes a great camp knife and a wicked fighter. I have a carbon steel French peasants knife from lee valley that is pretty good and would look great with a primitive leather sheath. Also i don't use my DFLE nearly as much as I do any of the ones I picked.
I kind of like the idea of which 3 knives.
For me it would be the ZDP chefs from Hattori , my new Skookum and my Caly3. I don't actually have the hattori though.
